Zoloft? - September 30th 2011, 03:18 AM

I got put on Zoloft about three weeks ago and since then my appitite has been all over the place. My docotor said it shouldn't have an effect on my appitite or weight gain but the side effect list said it might. Anyways anyone else who has been on it have this problem. Also she said it takes 6 weeks to work but I honestly feel worse than I did when I wasn't on it. I mean I could spend hours on the computer reading fanfiction now I can't go five minutes doing that because I'm just uninterested. Also I love spring board diving and lately I haven't been doing it the whole 2 hours each time. I just hate this I don't know what to do UGH. Anyone else have this type of problem with this medicine? Or am I just crazy

If you are not feeling better, talk to your doctor. The chemistry of the anti-depressant may just not agree with you. I am not on Zoloft, but I know that sometimes particular meds don't work with particular people. This drug just may not work well for you.

It's normal to feel "all over the place" at first - your brain has to get used to the influx of chemicals.

It's also not unusual for you to feel worse than you did before. I know that for the first 4-6 weeks, I felt terrible, but my overall condition improved drastically after that time and I could finally function like a "normal" person.

However, if after 6 weeks you still feel awful, definitely go back to your doctor as, like Traci said, this type of antidepressant might not be the right one for you, in which case there are others you can try.

I think you should call the doctor, make a plan to go off of it, and try something else. It clearly is not working for you. Don't waste several more weeks feeling worse and worse. The adverse effects you have described make me think that you should really not be taking it. The point of these kinds of drugs is to negate over-excitement, not to enhance sluggishness and inattention. I'd say call the doctor as soon as possible.

Frankie, everything everyone is saying here is correct.

Let me throw in my $.02, and as always, your mileage may vary.

You didn't mention the specific reasons or symptoms you were put on the Zoloft, but if it was for depression, the symptoms/changes you're describing in yourself could as easily be accounted for by that (the reason for the meds), rather than the effects (or lack thereof) of the meds. It's a chicken and egg thing.

As an FYI, it takes a few weeks to titrate the dosage of medication to therapeutic levels (the point where it 'Kicks in' or has the desired effect). It's done slowly over time to avoid the kinds of side effects that you believe you're having. And until the therapeutic dose is reached (after the gradual increases over a few weeks), people typically don't feel much of anything, be it good or bad.

That said, Zoloft might not be the med for you. But, before you determine that, it's best to talk with the doc and assess how much of what you're experiencing is 'Zoloft' and how much is 'Depression'. There's no doubt you're experiencing something there, the question is the best way of addressing that, and the best way of that, is to talk (perhaps with increased frequency) with your doc.

PM me with the link of the post you'd like me to respond to.

I was on amitrytiline, spelling is probably wrong, but it made me feel worse and worse everyday, finally I got to he point where I took a full bottle, I had to get all my organs checked for damage, and now I'm on suicide watch... It's not fun. I would talk to your doctor ASAP!

I'm on sertraline (zoloft) and have been for 18 months now. I can say that at the beginning of my treatment I felt a lot worse for a few weeks. Very depressed and paranoid. Keep taking it though, it will hopefully get easier! It's been a great help for me.
Your doctor is right, it shouldn't really affect appetite/weight gain but they can all affect people in different ways. It may seem horrible now but it really can get better!
Maybe ask if you can get a bit more support for these early weeks, I definitely needed it when I was low. Its good to have someone to keep you going.
If you need to talk, i'm here

Re: Zoloft? - September 30th 2011, 10:29 PM

I'm on Zoloft and for the first few weeks of it, I felt awful. Pretty much worse than I did to start with and I desperately wanted to stop taking it but my doctor wouldn't let me.

With the appetite, I also went through that. I started crazing some of the strangest things, and my eating was never consistant. It was allllll over the place.

One of my best friends was put on the medicine the same time that I was, and he went through the same things that I was going through almost at even the exact timeframe that i went through them. That's simply coincedence though because the drug will work differently on different people.

Talk to your doctor about any concerns you have with taking this medicine, and he can tell you what to do from there. I hope that you figure everything out. <3

I might be crazy.
But have I told you lately that I love you?
You're the only reason that I'm not afraid to fly.

Re: Zoloft? - October 1st 2011, 03:10 AM

Thank you to all the replys from people who actually are taking the med and answering my questions.

As for the rest I know when to take things into account and call a doctor I have been on pills since I was 3 years old. Sorry if this sounds rude I just don't think some of you read the whole thing
