Do you find your more creative when your depressed?

I have depression and scratch myself when I'm upset, but I find I am really creative when I am at my lowest.Am I the only one who finds that depression is good for creativity?I write stories and my best stories are dark and sad.

Personally, I've found myself occasionally being creative when depressed, but it usually depends on what made me depressed, more than anything. But, under the right (or would it be wrong?) circumstances, I've made some pretty decent paintings while feeling depressed.

My answer to the question would be: sometimes. I occasionally write poetry when I'm feeling really bad, and sometimes it turns out really well. I guess I just have all those emotions to pour into it. However, sometimes when it's bad, all I can do is sit there and cry, and I am unable to form coherent thoughts, let alone be creative.

Well I have never been that depressed but when I'm depressed I usually write down everything that goes in my mind in a special notebook I have for this stuff (the other side of my religion notebook :P cause I don't write that much in religion class) and I become influenced to write a lot, then I analyse everything in a 3rd person view and I usually think harder and clearer in moments of depression so I guess as weird as it is the answer is yes but not specifically artistic and creative in the thing you want like maybe you want to draw better (probably the reason you were depressed in the first place) but you can't but you'll be better in other things; of course this doesn't apply for all people cause some people don't handle depression like you do so they don't express it with art or music. Hopes this helps.

Yes I do find when I'm really low that I am sometimes more creative and will sometimes write poems but usually I just blog about it because I feel so low that I cannot be bothered to be creative and write a poem.

I think there is a huge difference between a low period, and depression. Depression is never ending, not having any reason to do anything but sit in bed all day pretty much for a prolonged period of time.

Feeling low is getting really bad for a few hours, days, ext. This is when people I think get creative, because they haven't reached that worthlessness feeling yet.

I think more than anything, it's differing levels of depression. Also, I'm sure that the use of the word "depressed" doesn't only refer to Clinal Depression, but rather generalized, which can mean Situational Depression (i.e. after a bad break-up) as well.

Depression is Depression, whether the cause is genetic, or just a short bout of depression based on something that happens in life. I don't have Depression, but I have Depressive Episodes, sometimes triggered, sometimes not. Triggered ones can inspire creativity, as a way to "vent". The episodes without a trigger, however, do not inspire any creative feelings.

Yeah, I do. When I'm at my lowest, I tend to write lyrics or poetry. It's all really depressing, but it's definitely my best work.
