Going back into therapy? - January 8th 2012, 07:52 PM

I've been thinking about going back into therapy for a few weeks now.

What's stopping me? My age and the fact I can't miss much school because of GCSE's.

I don't want my parents finding out and them having to sign forms and stuff (that's what happened last time). I turn 16 in May. Should I wait until then?

Advice would be greatly appreciated <3

Is there a way you can go back into therapy without your parents having to find out and sign forms?

Hi lovely.

I know it's hard when you're in your GCSEs but if you go on toe higher education then it's always going to be the same. You can catch up with work. Remember that.

Why don't you want your parents knowing? You could go back to CAMHS but as far as I am aware of, your parents would have to be told to give consent. However, do you have a school counselor? I don't think your parents would be told if you saw a school counselor but if you were to struggle with self harm or anything like that, they might have to talk to your parents then. If you're a danger to you, they will probably have to tell someone (parents, a teacher, head of year etc).

Admittedly, if you waited until sixteen and went back to CAMHS your parents would still have to give consent as far as I am aware. However, if you waited until then and went into adult services instead, they wouldn't need to know about it or give consent.

What ever you decide to do, just do what is best for you because you deserve the help. You really do.

All my love, Jessie x

The thing i've learned when dealing with school teachers and counselors is by law at least in Colorado they're required to tell the principal and the principal is then required to tell your parents if they learn that you are SHing....

Hey,

When you turn 16 you don't need parents permission anymore for CAMHS. When i went back to CAMHS the second time i was 17 and i went into the transition services, my case manager told me that it's when you're 16 your parents dont have to know. Also, after that age my doctor prescribed me meds for anxiety and they never had to talk to my mum about it......... my mum never found out that I was with them. Hope this helps in some way!

Uhmmm... So maybe I'll make a doctors appointment after summer and ask about it. See what they say. Not even sure if I want to start it again. Guess we'll see ... Thankyou xxxx

It might be different at different places because I know at mine, you're parents have to be told still. Perhaps you could ask your doctor about it Just remember you deserve help!

I'd have thought you'd have to be 18 before they stop needing to tell your parents, but I don't know how CAMHS works :')

Charli, you need to take care of yourself first. GCSEs can wait, your safety and happiness can't. If you feel like you need help, then I strongly advise you start therapy again. Find out about CAMHS in your area, and see what their age restrictions are, and wait until you're 16 again. Or wait until summer, if you think you can make it. But May/June is going to be so hard with exams etc.

Take care of yourself, you're important <3
