Anti depressents - January 10th 2012, 09:16 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

How would I bring up the subject of anti-depressents with my mum ? Shes very anti medication, but my counsellor has suggested them, and I said no at the time as I don't trust myself around pills at the moment as I could just save them up (which I've been doing with paracetamols, ibuprofens and sleeping pills) . So I'm pretty sure I would do the same with the anti -depressents. But part of me says to give it ago, but that would mean discussing it with my mum and with my Dr. My Dr has suggested them in the past too. But my mum is very anti medication and due to the amount of money I earn which is not very much but my hours at the moment are to much to recieve JSA so I had to close my claim today for that, So If I was to get them my mum would need to pay for them ect. How do I bring this subject with my mum who is very anti medication ?

the girl who always seemed unbreakble finally
BROKE
the girl who seemed strong
CRUMBLED
the girl who always laughed
CRIED
the girl who never stopped trying finally
GAVE UP

she let her fake smile fade and as she did a tear rolled down her cheek and she whispered

' i can't do this anymore'

If I were in your position, I would ask my mom to come with me to my next therapy session, and I wouldn't say why (if she asked, I would say something like, "I need your support," but wouldn't mention the medication). Before the session, tell your doctor that you'd like to give medication a shot, but you need him/her to educate your mom on the benefits of anti-depressants. Your doctor can focus on the scientific facts - for some individuals, anti-depressants are effective because they alter the chemical makeup of your brain. Therapy can be very useful, but for some people, they need help regulating the chemicals that influence the depression.

If your mom still won't agree to pay for your medication after listening to your doctor's explanation (and she won't even agree to a "trial period" of 2-3 months), then you can either go without the medication, or find a way to get the medication on your own. That may mean increasing your hours at work or getting a second job in order to pay for the medication. That may mean looking into other insurance plans. That may mean volunteering for an experimental anti-depressant with a reputable lab/study group. It will be harder to get the medication without your mother's assistance, but if you really feel like medication could make a lasting difference in your recovery, I think it's worth putting in the extra work to find affordable means of obtaining that medication.
