Fear of choking - January 25th 2012, 05:07 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of eating disorders, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I've always been scared of choking (who isn't?) but right now it has gotten pretty bad. If I'm eating food I will have to chew it for ages before swallowing. I also have to eat tiny bits at a time. I'm just really scared of choking on it :| It makes me anxious and sometimes before I swallow it I can feel my heart pounding.

I choked on bacon when I was 5 years old in ASDA. I could have died unless a man sat next to us didn't give me the heimlich manoeuvre :/ I think that's what made me scared. It has just gotten a lot worse these past couple of weeks. I also have to eat sitting right up or else it scares me.

I'm starting to get a little anxious every time I have to eat.

Are there particular foods that make you almost choke more than others? Something else is that perhaps your fear of choking is making you more anxious/ tense, thus making it more difficult to chew/ swallow?

It's never a bad idea to consult a doc about this. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head but I am sure someone will chime in with a better idea.

I find it hard to chew some meat. I used to spit it out when I was a kid because I couldn't swallow it properly, my mum just thought I didn't like meat.

It's a pretty normal fear to have for choking, especially if you choked when you were very young. The fact that the fear has gotten worse over the last few weeks makes me wonder what has triggered it. Have you noticed any more stress in your life, or did you see someone choking recently?

Talking with your doctor about it is probably a good idea. The tension when you are eating is probably making your anxiety of choking hit closer to home.

I guess the best thing would be talk to your doctor, counsellor etc. You could try some breathing exercises before eating and see if calming down that way helps you eat?
