Mom is exercising a lot? - April 15th 2012, 04:54 AM

I feel like my mom is exercising too much. She exercised last night, this morning, and today she said she wanted to exercise tonight. My parents friends invited my parents over one night and my mom had an exercise class that night around the same time. She would of rather went to her exercise class than hang out with close friends, either though the exercise class happens 3 times a week for about and hour, plus she exercises at home. She wanted to find an excuse not to go to her friends but she didn't want to tell them she wanted to go exercise. She went to their house anyway because my dad wanted too, and she said no the last time they asked.

Also she talks a lot about other people's weight. Like she'll just make little comments like "Wow, she's skinny" or "Man, she's chunky!" She also told me when I was in preschool and kindergarten that she weighed pounds and she was about 35 years old, and she's around 5 foot 4 inches, is that healthy? She (Edited)also talks a lot about calorie content and carb content. This morning I over heard my dad say to her in a joking tone "You're wasting away, you look anorexic" I would say that she's a healthy weight, but she has lost some, and she's thinner than most people her age. A couple days ago she asked me if I thought she was too skinny, I told her she looks healthy.
She also takes prescription pills for a serotonin deficiency.

Does this sound normal? I feel like I'm just paranoid because I'm in the binge-starve cycle right now.
Sorry this is so long, I would really appreciate it if someone responded.

Have you asked her about why she feels the need to exercise so much?
Maybe she is going through a faze, she might still have some insecurities. But I think the best place to start would be asking her about it. See what she says.
I hope this helped, and I totally understand that you are concerned for your mother.

Next time she talks about exercising I'll ask her why she needs to so much.

I agree, ask her why she does it. Anything u do too much or in an obsessive way normally indicates something is wrong. She may be using exercise to escape from something she's worried about, she may be obsessing a bit about her body, or may be something else, but I would ask her and see what she says...

Thank you guys. And I think she is obsessing over her body.

I asked her why she needs to exercise everyday. She just says "I don't exercise everyday." Then I said "Uh pretty much." And she didn't have anything to say.

Maybe she doesn't feel in a place to talk about it yet. Try being patient with your mom, but I would express my concerns to her.

I know you have set her down and asked why she exercising so much, but maybe you should try telling her about your fear.
Something like, "Mom, I know you dont think you exercise that much, but I've been seeing it a lot and it's been worrying me. I hope you are okay, I hope we can be honest with each other." and leaving it at that.
You love your mom, but you cannot force her to get help if there is any problem. I think just by supportive and loving her you can help in some way.

I'm sorry this is still going on for you, and I would be feeling the same way you are right now. Just keep being supportive. I know you care about your mother.

Shelby

I'm with Shelby, try to transmit her your concerns about it, although if she doesn't see it as a problem, there is not much you can do. ´Maybe you can also propose some activity to do with her so that she can be distracted with other things and not just exercise, going to dinner, going to the movies, having a walk in the countryside, going to the theatre, a concert, I don't know...

Thanks. I think she's worried about me too. So if she does have a problem I hope one day we can talk about them together.

Yeah that's true. And we already do a lot of activities together. We go shopping and eat mostly.
