Helmets? - May 13th 2012, 07:34 PM

Quick question:

Do you ever recommend riding a bike without a helmet? Not a motorcycle, just a bike.

I would say using a helmet is smart, but I've recently been to a Health Behaviors in School aged Children conference, and a lot of people who are in northern Canada who don't enforce wearing a helmet (due to the fact that there are less paved roads, less trafic, and generally, they're biking around resedential areas), even if it's a good idea to.

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fucking times
That I'm OK, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind
But this has got the best of me, and I can't seem to sleep

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET.

I am in a very special place to be able to give you that advice. As a 10 year old, wearing a helmet rather literally saved my life. Instead of having my brains spread all over the road, I walked away with a head-injury. (Albeit a serious one, but it's better than being dead, right?)

I always encourage people to wear helmets. It's like seatbelts, to not wear one is just dumb. Sure, sometimes they're a pain, but you can get relatively stylish and comfortable helmets, so I don't see the issue.

So yeah. Always wear it. Always always always.

I would suggest wearing a helmet, where I live you ride your bike on the road on bike lanes. Its dangerous sometimes, I have fell before due to a car getting to close, it was minor, but could have been really bad.

Helmets are good. A lot of people at my university don't wear them, but by the way they ride, I have no idea why they don't. I've seen a lot of pretty epic falls, along with being hit by a few. They're a good idea, plus you can get cute ones and look fabulous.

Wear one. If you're on the road, wear one. If you're in a quiet neighbourhood, wear one. If you're on a BMX at a skatepark, wear one. I wouldn't recommend not wearing one. It could mean the difference between life and death in a serious accident.

When I use to ride my bicycle, I never wore one but I would recommend it. You never know what is going to happen when you're out on your bike and you don't know how drivers are going to be, you could end up getting from a to b perfectly fine or you could end up falling off or worse so it's better to be safe than sorry.

I know my dad has been in one or two accidents on his bike involving cars and I know he is pretty safe when it comes to riding his bikes, using lights etc so it just goes to show that you never know what could happen and it's better to be safe, as I said!

Re: Helmets? - May 25th 2012, 03:00 AM

I don't wear a helmet at the moment because I out grew mine a while back, however. I can say it can save lives, and I would recommend wearing one. I myself suffer from black outs, so I usually always wear one
(like I said I don't know because I do not have one, so I don't go far if I do)

But I have blacked out while on a bike, and the helmet did save me from needing stitches and what not, so yes, wear a helmet!

Also, depending on where you live, it's against the law to NOT wear a helmet. o.o

It's good to wear one, but if you're going to be cycling in places where there aren't many cars and you're a competent cyclist then you're probably alright without. I personally cycle to college every day and I haven't worn a helmet for about two years :P
