Chest pains - July 28th 2012, 02:37 AM

Hey everyone!
For as long as I can remember, I've occasionally gotten sharp pains in my chest at random occasions. They happen on the left side of my chest, where people say your heart is (then again, some people say it's in the center...?). I don't think the pain has anything to do with my heart though. The pain is hard to describe, but it happens if I take a deep breath or extend my arms up or stand. Just a sudden stabbing pain that fades away if I relax. Sometimes the pain is dull, sometimes it hurts a lot. It's not constant either, it only comes on every so often. I've never said anything about it to anyone because it's hard to explain. Is it... heartburn? I've no idea what heartburn feels like :P
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

PS- and as I've said, this is something I've experienced since I was a child, so it's not new.

Sounds like anxiety. I get it too. Go see a doctor, they may prescribe meds or send you to see a therapist. Lots of help out there so I wouldn't worry x

You don't know about my past, and
I don't have a future figured out.
And maybe this is going too fast.
And maybe it's not meant to last,

There is absolutely no way you can suggest it, "sounds like anxiety" because the mentioned symptoms were extremely vague and apply to numerous pathologies.

Can you describe the pains a bit more, such as the duration, does the pain radiate or is it localized, whether they're affected by exercise, experienced by other family members, is there pain when you lie on your back or chest, auto-immune disorder, etc...?

Normally, there can be a variety of bacterial or viral infections that can cause pleurisy, which often masks as chest pain and you would feel quite a lot of pain upon moving or breathing. Sometimes the pain will feel as though it's from your shoulder down to your stomach, however, this isn't something you would have since childhood. With heartburn, you'd feel a very noticeable burning sensation and the pain often radiates. If the pain occurs when you move around, there probably is an issue with your lungs (i.e. pleurisy or something else) but it's very difficult to suggest what it could be since most things would resolve themselves or with medication.

Your heart is in the center of your chest, although it protrudes a bit more to the left. If you want to better understand where it is, pretend to draw a line from the middle of your chin straight down your neck and chest. If you put your fingers at your chest plate then lay your hand down flat on the left side of your chest, you'll be able to feel your heart is located at the center, slightly off to the left. This is the, "normal" position, although not the case for all people.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
