BRACES!!!!!! - December 15th 2012, 02:20 AM

Yesterday, I found out I can get braces to close my teeth together. To be honest, I'm VERY excited but the only thing is I'm afraid it will hurt when they put it on I have many questions to ask ..AHEM...
1.Does it hurt to get braces?
2.Does it mainly hurt the first couple of days?
3.If it hurts, how would I be able to eat?
4.I heard you could get colors. What colors make brown eyes pop?
Thanks

Re: BRACES!!!!!! - December 15th 2012, 02:57 AM

How exciting! I've had braces for almost a year, and I also had them for about 18 months when I was younger, and they're really not too bad.

1. It doesn't hurt at all to have the braces put on. You won't even feel it. I suggest looking up a YouTube video about "getting braces" so you can see what happens, but it won't be the least bit painful!

2. Yes, it hurts mainly the first few days. When I got my braces, they first started to hurt about 3-4 hours after they were put on, and then they hurt a little more the next day. They hurt for about 4 days before the pain went away, but it was never unbearable or anything (and I didn't even take any pain medication), and it hurt less and less every day. You could take ibuprofen or something if you want to, but I've never needed it.

3. I definitely recommend eating mostly soft foods for about one week after you get them put on, because a) your mouth will probably be sore, and b) eating with braces takes some getting used to. The day you get your braces and for maybe a day or two after, plan on eating things like mashed potatoes, yogurt, ice cream, pudding, applesauce, etc. These things are easy to eat without much chewing and won't get stuck in your braces. Also avoid drinking out of a straw for a few days (this might hurt) or eating/drinking anything very hot.

4. Colors are the best! They're really a lot of fun. Here, try this: http://www.pbhs.com/ortho/braces/braces.html or this: http://www.drjohnking.com/BracesSelector.html or this: http://www.orthodonticcarespecialist...orChooser.aspx to help you pick your colors. I personally think that green, purple, pink, blue, or a combination of these would look nice I don't recommend getting clear, white, or yellow, because clear/white will stain easily and look disgusting and yellow looks disgusting on teeth no matter what.

Other tips...
1. Brush your teeth AT LEAST twice a day (for example, before school and before bed) and floss every day if you can.
2. If you get rubber bands to wear, ALWAYS wear them as much as your orthodontist tells you to. My friend had to wear her braces for an extra 4 or 5 months because she didn't wear her rubber bands!
3. Don't eat the foods your ortho tells you not to eat. They will probably say not to eat things like nuts, popcorn, gum, hard candies, etc. because they could break your braces or get really stuck in them. This is true. So don't eat them, even if your friends try to convince you it's ok (I know from experience haha).
4. Drinking something cold (like ice water) or swishing it around in your mouth is a good temporary pain reliever, because the wires on braces are heat-activated You could also suck on an ice cube, but be VERY careful not to bite down on it or chew on it at all because you could break your braces really easily that way, and of course try not to choke.

Good luck!
Oh, and you can always PM/VM me if you have any other questions or just want to talk.

Re: BRACES!!!!!! - December 16th 2012, 07:31 AM

1. It's different for everyone, but it hurt for me the first week or so. Cut your food into little pieces because it hurts to bite into things
2. The first few days are the worst when it comes to pain. It's not unbearable, just really uncomfortable. I got mine on when I was in middle school so it's hard to remember the feeling :P
3. Like I said before, just cut your food up into itty bitty pieces. It will get annoying after awhile so when the pain goes away you should be able to eat without a problem. Well, the only problem you'll have then is getting the food stuck in your braces. I would suggest staying away from bagels with cream cheese. I wish I'd known that in 7th grade when I ate lunch ;P
4. The colors is the best part Bright colors would look good with brown eyes (I have brown eyes too) like pink, orange, blue, green, just no white or your food will stain it yellow. ick

haha braces are very different for everyone!

1. No It doesnt hurt to get the braces I'm sure you will be fine there
2. My friend got braces, and she was fine straight after she got them. Apparently it didn't hurt at all, and she was able to eat hard foods straight away But of course, that differs from person to person
3. If it hurts, eat pureed foods, like stewed apple, yougurt, weetbix, up and go drinks and stuff like that. also try cooling your mouth down with cool water
4. Coloured braces are fun, but only if you want your braces on for an extra few months! My friend got the metal ones that work fast, and she looks so pretty! for brown eyes I'd say either a blue or pink would look nice, if you are going for colours that is!

Have fun with your braces, and dont be afraid to message me!

I know you've got plenty of responses already, but I'd like to put in my two cents if that's okay :3

1. Nope, not at all actually. You're mouth just feels really weird after because they put sort of "anti-saliva" pads in your mouth, so your teeth don't get wet during the procedure. At least that did for me! I had braces for two years and just got them off four months ago. But no, it doesn't hurt at all. Just a bit strange.

2. It's gonna hurt, yep. It hurt so bad for my during the first week, so when you get them on and they don't hurt for the first few hours, don't let that fool you! Everyone told me it would hurt, but after they were put on they didn't hurt till four or five hours later, when I got home later that day. I thought I just got lucky or something, but noooo. It's going to be a sort of pain that you can't exactly explain, it's just you can't bite or really talk much for a while. But don't worry! All that pain is VERY worth it in the end and it won't hurt after a week, tops. Then you'll get them tightened and it will hurt all over again, but each time less and less and once you've got them on for a while, just a few months even, when you get them tightened it won't hurt at all.

3. You'll be able to eat yogurt and soft foods. I'd recommend ice cream and smoothies, or pudding even. Smoothies, definitely. It sort of gives you a reason to eat ice cream if you like that stuff. :3 Don't eat solid foods though! Not only will you not be able to chew on it without being in pain, it's pretty pointless to even try as you won't really taste the food anyway. I was really hungry so I did try solid foods, but it just hurt and I regretted doing it. So I just went down to soft foods that you don't have to chew and everything goes much smoother. Hmm, even baby food you can have if you don't mind the taste of those haha

3. I'd actually recommend like, purple or something lol. I didn't have any colors because I'm boring. It was always the default grey or whatever. But you can totally be creative with braces, like show off who you are! Just try out all different colours. If your ortho lets you, try for the two colors at once, like switching from blue and white or something (actually apparently white stains so maybe not white xD) 'cause that's the fun part of braces. So yeah, blue or purple or something like that. And bright colors would be fun too

1.Does it hurt to get braces?
It did for me because I had to hold my jaw open very wide for awhile. I have a small mouth and arthritis in my jaw so this was rather painful. If you don't have a jaw problem you should be fine.
2.Does it mainly hurt the first couple of days?
Oh yes. Very sore and very easy to set off. I survived on pain meds, milkshakes, and scrambled eggs for nearly a week.
3.If it hurts, how would I be able to eat?
Eat very soft things that aren't too hot or too cold (or that you can safely eat with a straw). Mashed potatoes, soup, eggs- anything you don't have to chew or floss out is a very good thing.
4.I heard you could get colors. What colors make brown eyes pop?
I never got colors... but rainbow was probably my favorite on everyone.

Re: BRACES!!!!!! - December 19th 2012, 04:16 PM

1.Does it hurt to get braces? The actual process of putting them on does not hurt
2.Does it mainly hurt the first couple of days? A little yeah, it depends on your pain tolerance--I was mostly fine, just needed softer food, my brother was a total wimp and needed tylonel and stuff though... It'll also hurt a little when ever they change wires or tighten stuff or do anything to cause a shift, but I think the first time is the worst cause your not expecting it or you just don't know what to expect
3.If it hurts, how would I be able to eat? soup, soft foods like noodles and such, you could probably just eat what ever though, a steak might not be a good idea though, get some ravioli haha
4.I heard you could get colors. What colors make brown eyes pop? you don't really get that great of a selection--certain colours go with certain "levels" (say, lime green red and blue will go in one, black red and yellow in another) plus if you had braces like mine that may dentists use there aren't elastics over each bracket cause the elastics technically hold in the wire (I think, I never had that kind), but brown eyes go with anything and the colours on your braces aren't REALLY going to help haha. Braces are braces as far as most people are concerned, no one is going to think that little spots of green are eye poppers haha... You could get some nice purple or bronze eye shadow to take care of that

Re: BRACES!!!!!! - January 1st 2013, 06:35 AM

1. If the tighten them straight away then yes they will hurt, but if they wait to tighten them then no; not until they have been tightened
2. For the first Week it is pretty painful; it varies from person to person though; personally it hurt ALOT for me since my teeth felt like they were merging forcefully together :/
3. For the first week you are meant to eat softer foods: if it hurts a lot you may want to try soups, noodles, ice cream , smoothies, milkshakes etc. anything you dont need to use your teeth (aka bite into ) will work..
4. I don't know since not all clinics let you choose colors - you never know you could end up with silver ugly metal ones like mine O.o
and if you really want something that isn't noticeable try invisateen ( ask the dentist about it ) - Its like see through so people wont even think you have braces
