Burns - April 10th 2013, 12:45 PM

So last night I gave myself 3 full thickness burns on my arm and I went to the minor injuries unit this morning because I was a bit concerned since I have no feeling in them. They're sending me to the burns unit at a hospital 25 miles away to get the burns checked out. I'm just wondering what they will do for the burns? Does anyone else have experience with this? the burns are 3cmx2cm each if that helps. I'm pretty nervous

If you gave your self "Full thickness burns" As in, all the skin is burned. They will make sure to clean out all the dead skin, and make sure there is no spread of infection. Then most likely, they will do skin graphs to help regrow the skin.

how do they get rid of the dead skin? I've had a burn like this before, but I was too scared to get help for it and it took about 4 months to heal.

Well, it depends on the hospital, but they just go in and clean it.

Treatment for burns depends on their severity. They mostly give prophylatic antibiotics (precautionary antibiotics). Skin grafts can sometimes be used for full thickness. Depending on their location and this can depend on the patient and how they feel about the appearance of the burns. Physiotherapy can be used if it's in a place that can affect movement.

I hope your burns heal well. I'm sorry you sustained the injuries and you'll be ok x

Re: Burns - April 10th 2013, 05:23 PM

thanks for the reply. the nurse said they were quite deep, but they don't seem to have damaged any muscle or anything. They're on my forearm so they should be fine. I'm getting quite anxious now that when I go to the burns unit they won't think the burns are bad and will think I'm just attention seeking. I'm really tempted to go over the burns and make them worse, just so that people won't laugh at me. I know I shouldn't and I really don't want to, but I just need to get through the next 17 hours.

No no no no please do NOT go over the burns to make them worse. The nurse must've thought they're pretty bad if she's sending you to a specialist. They will NOT think you're attention seeking. It wasn't you who made the appointment/referral it was the nurse. x

Re: Burns - April 10th 2013, 06:14 PM

That's what I'm hanging onto. It wasn't me, it was the nurse who said I should go. I think I'm going to go to bed early tonight just so I'm not thinking about it for hours. I'm finding it really difficult not to interfere with it, even keeping the bandage on is a nightmare. I'm terrible at just leaving things, I even have to pull out drips and stitches.
