Should I go to the ER? (Urgent) - October 19th 2018, 08:42 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Triggering prefix for mentions of bodily fluids.

Since Sunday I've been feeling nauseous with occasional vomiting and dizziness. At first my psychiatrist thought I had Lithium toxicity, but she took my levels on Tuesday and they were within a therapeutic range. Wednesday I went to urgent care and they diagnosed me with a stomach bug. They gave me a shot of Promethazine (which didn't help) and a prescription for Zofran (which also hasn't helped). I have no fever or chills, and the level of nausea has stayed the same. I haven't vomited today (yet), but I also stopped eating solid food. So it's hard to tell whether there is improvement or not.

I would avoid the ER entirely except my main concern is that the nausea hasn't dissipated with the anti-nausea meds. I just don't know what it could be. I have no gallbladder (had it removed in January of 2017) and there's no way I'm pregnant. I have no abdominal pain and when the doctor at urgent care felt my abdomen they didn't feel anything abnormal.

I'm afraid to go to the ER and have them just tell me it's a stomach bug/not be able to do anything for me. Also I'm probably rather nervous because the last time I had nausea like this my gallbladder had turned to sludge and was giving me sepsis, so now I'm super freaked out by nausea that won't go away with medication. What should I do?

I know you've stopped eating solid foods, but how are you with liquids?

It is concerning if you are feeling sick and have been for a while and medications don't seem to be working. Is it possible to go back to urgent care? Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with going to the ER. If the last time you had nausea like this was when you were developing sepsis, then it's always worth going to ER, even if it turns out to be nothing serious. It's very understandable you would be concerned about this and it's always good to err on the side of caution.

Thank you for your response. I am able to keep down liquids for the most part. I haven't thrown up today so far, although there has been a lot of gagging and time in front of the toilet. I'm afraid to go back to urgent care because I fear there's not much they can do for me there.

How are you feeling now?

Another option, if possible, is to talk to a pharmacist/chemist. They might be able to give a bit more insight in your options and may be able to suggest other treatments.

Thank you for your response. For the most part I feel better. No more nausea, although I do still feel exhausted. I'm really glad that I seem to be on the mend.
