4 Day Headache - January 15th 2010, 09:42 PM

Tuesday - Thursday I stayed home with a really bad headache. Today I went to school because it wasn't as bad. 2 hours into the school day I had to call home.

I have had this headache for 4 days.

I get migraines. Usually for a day or two. Typical migraines last from 4-72 hours. 72 hours is 3 days. My migraine medication is not working, and no over the counter medicines are either. I usually sleep all day when I have a migraine but there's something about this that makes it impossible for me to sleep during the day.

This headache changes. Sometimes it's a dull ache. Right now it's throbbing. Every once in a while theres a stabbing pain in one side of my head, but those only last a few seconds.

I am very sensitive to light, and slightly sensitive to sound. I am unable to concentrate very long. I am lethargic, but my arms and legs are restless. I have a mild fever that comes and goes. When the headache is really bad I feel lightheaded and shaky.

I am not dehydrated, hungry or sleep deprived. I've had more water and sleep than usual, and am eating like normal.

I have tried over the counter headache medicines, my migraine medicine, resting, putting ice on my neck, and caffeine. The last two being recommendations for headaches. Nothing seems to help.

If anybody knows anything that could cause a headache like this, please let me know. I also am open to other recommendations for relief because I am unable to see a doctor until later into the weekend.

My first thought is to think; has your diet changed in any major way recently? Sometimes that can trigger a headache.

Second thought is...well, as much as this sucks for me to say, I'm thinking going to the doctor is your best bet, since none of us here can really say exactly what's wrong, especially for a headache so presistant.

I hope it gets better soon though dude.

it could be a number of things.. but really any persistent, unexplained pain shouldn't be ignored and a trip to your doctor is your best bet. in the mean time, make sure you keep hydrated and eat some banana's or drink some orange juice.. because your potassium could be low, and that causes headaches for me.

It MAY be a symptom of a viral bug as you've mentioned fever - so watch out for any other symptoms over the coming days like nausea and such. It could also be a sign of a sinus infection.
You really should stay away from caffeine, that's been known to cause headaches and it's generally not very good for you anyhow. I would recommend you stop taking painkillers aslo, particularly if you've been taking them for quite a while as you can grow resistant to them therefore having to take a bigger dose to relieve pain in the future which therefore might make you prone to becoming ill because of this - too much painkillers can actually CAUSE pain - ironic much?

You should alternate between a cool compress and a warm one on your forehead, whichever feels better for you. Lie in a darkened room and avoid stressing yourself out.

Other than that, just make sure you're eating and drinking well. If the headache doesn't die down soon, you really ought to see your GP.

Take care x

I went to the clinic this morning. After an hour of questions and checking my reflexes and everything, the doctor said it was an atypical migraine. I got a shot for the pain and it's gone now.

Seeing as the problem now seems to be resolved, I'm going to close this. If you want this reopening, please PM me or feel free to make another thread. Glad you're feeling better.
