Question Thyroid Problem - February 19th 2010, 03:33 AM

I had bloodwork done because I've gained a lot of weight over the last year or so. My doctor told me I have a very high thyroid... 4.30 is high... And mine is over 8.5. That's bad. She said I have half of the metabolism as an average person. Once I'm on medication she said I'll probably drop "many many" pounds. She said I'll be eating the same as I am now, and probably be starving because my metabolism is going to eat right through the food. I'm so excited!

Is she right? Any experience?

Re: Thyroid Problem - February 19th 2010, 07:23 PM

I'm not going to say she's "right" because i've been on thyriod medication for over a year, i take levothyriod and prednisone, and ever since i've been on the prednisone i've actually gained weight, but then again everyone is different, if you are ot sure or confident with what your doctor is saying then i suggest getting a second opinon, because i dont know if you'll "drop many pounds" i honestly think its best for you to go to an endocrinologist (use google to find out what that is please i cant explaain it) their specalists who deal with the thyriod and things like that, so thats what i think but its your choice, and we arent doctors here but we can give you advice and our opinons, i hope this advice helps you.

She actually explained to me kind of how it happens. So I believe her, but I just haven't heard of many experiences like this.

I've Been Tested And Waiting For The Bloodwork.
But Yes If Its Overactive Then The Medication Should Make You Lose Weight
And To Elizabeth The Prednisone Is A Steroid And Steroids Makes You Put On Weight. Which Is Why Certain Athletes Take It And Get In Trouble If It Would Aid Their Performance

ooooh in my AP Bio class we learned about thyroid deficiencies...and everything she says sounds right obviously medicine affects people in slightly different ways, but hopefully it works out! My mom is a gynecologist and she said thyroid problems are common.

It's nice to meet someone else on here who has thyroid issues. I have hypothyroidism, though. My body's not making enough. The autoimmune disease is called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, as my immune system is killing my thyroid gland.

I am taking Synthroid currently. Hope everything works out for you. =]

Did you lose weight on it? The doc said I would lose weight because now my metabolism is half of what it should be. If I maintain a weight now, and my metabolism is up, that means I should be losing lots of weight, right?
