Anemia? - November 27th 2010, 08:36 AM

What does anemia feel like and what is it caused by?

I've been having breathing issues lately. Well... By "lately" I mean "for the past few years," but I was wondering if it MIGHT be anemia? It feels like I can't get enough air when I take a normal breath and I have to sigh deeply to get any oxygen sometimes. I've heard it might be anemia... just tell me if you need more information (the time is messing with my head).

Thank you!

Anaemia is a less than normal amount of red blood cells in the blood stream, often caused by iron deficiency. Shortness of breath is one possible symptom of very severe anaemia, but I would imagine that if it got to the severity that you have such breathing issues that you would have other symptoms too, such as pale skin, tiredness, malaise and such.

However, I am no medical professional. The best thing to do is to go to the doctor. Anaemia is easily diagnosed with a simple blood test.

What you're experiencing could be any number of things, and only a doctor can tell you what. I'm personally on iron pills, and before I was on them I was exhausted all the time and scarily pale. It's best to go see a doctor.

Chances are it's not anemia but a respiratory disease. Unfortunately, there are hundreds so it is very difficult to say which one it may be as you might as well grab a medical dictionary and pick a letter to turn to.

Hey there,

Like it's been said, it's more likely to be a respiratory disease like Asthma. We're not medical professionals, so I would really recommend seeing your doctor as soon as you can!

Take care.

Aneia is when you don't have enough red blood cells , you'l;l be pale and lethargic. Usually you can go to the doctor who takes a sample opf your blood and tests it for anemia. If you have it you get given pills
Hope this helped x
(P.s I have never had it by my close friend ALWAYS does )

Re: Anemia? - November 30th 2010, 06:39 PM

I Have anemia and have it for years, I've never experinced breathing problems caused by anemia but caused by my asthma.

My symptoms were tired all the time, didn't matter how much sleep I had, always had black eyes, really pale.

There are many more symptoms of aneima such as:
Fatigue
decreased energy
weakness
shortness of breath
light headedness
Palpuations (feeling of the heart racing or beating irregularly)
looking pale

Symptoms of severe anemia may include:

Chest Pain
Dizziness
Fainting or passing out
Rapid heart rate

Anemia can only be diagnosed by a doctor or a nurse, by doing a simple blood test.

You will then be advised to eat lots of green vegatables and to be on iron tablets for aslong as the doctor feels nessacry.

I was borderline anemic for a while and was extremely pale and tired all the time. I had to have a simple finger prick to see if it was really anemia or not.
The breathing issues can also be a sign of a respiratory illness though, it's best to check with your doctor!

Thanks, everyone!
Umm... How bad is it to NOT see a doctor for respiratory illnesses OR anemia? I mean, I know it's been at LEAST five years that I've had these symptoms, and it doesn't get very bad often. Well, it does, but fainting only happens occasionally. I'm afraid of doctors and I have a very distorted idea of what is and is not serious, and that's why I'm asking.

Re: Anemia? - December 13th 2010, 07:33 PM

its best if you go rather than not go, coz iron levels do get dangerously low and can cause you blackouts. its best to just go there, get a blood test done and then get your results. you most likely be put on iron tablets for a couple of months depending on how severe your aneamia is. but all the same, it myt not even be aneamia, take care.

If you've fainted because of this more than once, you should go to the doctor.

Hm. Oh well, I'll just tell them to test for whatever they think it is. I mean, it's just breathing, so the tests SHOULDN'T be a big deal. I don't know why I get so nervous sometimes.
