Canker Sores - December 8th 2010, 05:39 AM

So I think I have a canker sore, but I am not entirely sure. It is painful and I think I have had them before but I think they were related to being stress and deficient in some kind of vitamin. That is self-diagnosis, by the way. This one is large and it is painful to eat. I have been stressed due to exams, not seeing my boyfriend, volunteering, and being sick with a potential sinus infection. Mostly the sinus infection.

Anyway, it is irritating me to the point of where I don't want to eat food because food or non-water drinks will irritate it. Does anyone have any experience with canker sores and anything that will numb them?

I plan on going to the doctor's soon so please do not try to boost your post count by saying you are not medical professionals and go see a doctor. Even if I thought you guys were, I know you cannot practice medicine over the Internet.

Well, firstly, none of us are medical professionals so I would strongly recommend you see a doctor. Although unless it's causing you a lot of pain there's probably nothing he can give you.

Use mouthwash containing benzydamine hydrochloride, not your typical over the counter mouthwash (Antimicrobial mouthwash, especially). Make sure you're getting plenty of vitamin B, regardless of whether you have a deficiency or not, this will help prevent them from coming back. If it's really bothering you, try some anti-inflammatory medication (Corticosteroids and mouthwashes/sprays containing pain medications may be given), like ibuprofen (motrin) and benzydamine. Avoid spicy food, don't rinse with salt water and use precaution around over the counter mouthwashes. Make sure you're using a soft toothbrush when you brush your teeth, avoid eating hard foods, and reduce your stress levels by doing activities you find relaxing!
These are very, very common, especially around young adults, so it's nothing to worry about.

Take care.

I've always been told that rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water is very helpful. It will sting but keep it in your mouth, that will help it heal up faster. It can't make it worse so I'd really recommend it.

I had a really bad one right after I started getting better with mono, the only thing that really helped was time and orajel
