Thumb pain. -
November 28th 2011, 09:55 PM
So this may be a stupid question but whenever I play my handheld video games my thumb hurts from the wrist all the way to where it bends (Sorry if that makes no sense). It doesn't hurt when I text or anything so I don't know. I stopped playing video games for a few months to give it a break and I just started again today and it still hurts the same exact way.
Any idea why?

It'll be a result of the position the thumb is- particular when playing video games. The position for texting is different to that of gaming- due to the size of the device. It's most likely to be repetitive strain injury. But if it really starts to bother you then I'd suggest getting it checked out just in case

Exactly what Lottie said. Also, for RSI it's better to get it treated soon, otherwise it can get worse and lead to severe problems when you are older.
<3 So you have gray hair and you're only 26

How do I get that treated? I mean, I stopped playing video games for a few months to give it a break and I started again just yesterday and it felt the same. I thought giving it a break would be enough... so what do I do? Do I really need a doctor? I don't really want to go to the doctor and spend $50 copay just for them to do something I can do myself..

The treatment is basically things like learning when to take breaks before your thumb hurts, or learning better postures for where to place your thumb so it won't be as severe.
Some require massages and others (if theirs is keyboard related) getting a special keyboard. Worst cases are getting surgery. It couldn't hurt to talk to your doctor about it. I know it's just a game, but it shouldn't be causing you pain, so there is something going on. So you have gray hair and you're only 26
