Infection? - February 11th 2012, 04:42 PM

I do not have insurance, so I do not want to go to the doctor if I do not think it is infected. I have a small wound on my anckle and I think it might be infected. I am really bad about not letting wounds heal, as in, it has been there for several months because I cannot fight the impulse to not let it heal. Not sure why I do this, but anyway.. I have had an infection before and had to take anti-biotics, but this does not look the same.

The wound itself looks perfectly normal, but the surrounding area is very swollen and really red. Is this alone enough to say it is most likely infected or could it just be irritation? It does hurt, I think mostly from the swelling (it's swollen quite a lot considering how small the wound is) but it does not hurt any more or less to the touch. It's like a constant ache on the area. Any thoughts?

I would say this is may NOT be an infection. Definitely keep a close eye on it. Keep it clean. Keep antibiotic ointment on it. Etc.

If you notice it swells more, starts turning other colors, leaking green puss, or has lines coming from it...it's infected and you need to see a doctor asap.

Putting a cold cloth or ice pack on it can help reduce the swelling.

So you have gray hair and you're only 26

that's just another reason I love you...
