What's wrong with me? - September 7th 2009, 03:36 AM

Kay... So I guess I'm kind of depressed and because of immature girls, I've been in and out of depression and for some reason when I get upset, or something happens I just automatically think of going out driving around with some friends, doing drugs and drinking until I pass out... I mean, everytime, I get this urge.. It pushes me too... I can't fight it, it's like an itch, like when your waiting really long for someone to meet up with you get all frustrated..

I don't know what to do.

Hey there Brendan!

Let me start by saying, I'm kind of jealous that you're from P.E.I, that's somewhere I've always wanted to visit! I bet it's beautiful!

Alright, so on to your reason for posting. Dealing with alcohol and drug urges is never something that's easy. Before you do anything, you need to take a deep breath and tell yourself that it isn't you, it isn't what you want, or need. There are much better and healthier ways to deal with stress and depression. For example, you need to realize that things are not always your fault. Sometimes, you just can't help everything. There are some great tips here on this site. I read through most of it, and feel that it can be really helpful for relaxing yourself, and talking yourself down before you get to that point!

Now, you didn't mention whether you already have a problem with substances or whether right now it's just an urge. Just to be safe, I'll cover both .

Firstly, I really hope you're not driving drunk. I'm sure I don't need to remind you of the dangers of that, not to mention how much legal trouble you can get yourself into. You should talk to someone about drinking or drug use, someone you trust. There are a lot of different options, quitting cold turkey, finding a rehab centre, AA/NA meetings, anything that you need. Just as long as you can get yourself better, and not dependent on drugs or alcohol. There are a selection of videos in our video section, here, that may help you tieing together any loose ends.

Now, if you're not yet having a problem, there are some things you can do to fight the urges. Talk to someone, as I mentioned before. Except this time, talk about how you're feeling, get the feelings out so you don't feel the need to get drunk! I know, it sounds totally lame, as a fellow man, I can understand how hard it is to "talk about feelings". Just, trust me, if you can do it, it can be so rewarding, not to mention helpful. There are alternatives to this, and I'm going to go ahead and link you to the alternatives thread, here. Now, I know it says alternatives to self-harm, but a lot of these can come in handy to distract yourself from drinking too. Especially pay attention to the ways to take up your time. If you don't have the free time, then you won't want to drink, not to mention that can really help with depression also. Join a community group, volunteer, go for walks or runs. I'm sure P.E.I has some beautiful scenary you can see if you went for a walk! Try it, it could really help .

Lastly, I want to say, that you can do this. I know things may seem hopeless now, and believe be, I have been there too. Things can, and will get better for you my friend. There is light at the end of the tunnel, you just have to stay dedicated, and put your mind to it!

Please try and take care of yourself, and don't hesitate at all to PM me if you ever have any questions.
-Dylan.

It's just urges, I can do drugs and drink without relying on it... It's just, it's how I dealt with my anger issues and such, going out and partying.

I don't need the meeting or a center, it'll cause more problems then what it's worth. I just need to find a way of knowing I can drink and stuff, and not because I'm in a difficult position.
