Unhappy Reuniting w/ dad after 3 years - July 30th 2013, 04:57 AM

I haven't seen my dad since I was about 11. He showe'd up at my school on my birthday and pretty much tried to kidnap me. The police we called and I locked myself in the bathroom screaming and crying. He is bipolar and when he was especially mad he would call my mom and I (excuse me) a whore. He has recently sent me an email wanting to be a part of my life again. I have some great memories of him as well as the bad. So a part of me wants to give him a chance.
To top all of it off Last year I was admitted to a psyc hospital for almost a month for self harm issues. I am better now only going to therapy once a month but I'm still taking anti depressants. The whole experience changed me and my dad doesnt have the slightest idea what happened. My mom gives me a standard parent answer (it's up to you and go with your gut)
But I really don't know what my gut says. Any Advice? Anything is appriciated Thanks

Sorry if this is repeating what your mother says, but only you can make this decision. When you do, it is important to keep in your mind your feelings. If you feel like you are not yet emotionally stable enough to keep calm during this visit in case the worse happens, then I recommend that you should not go. If you believe that you will be alright if something bad happens, then you should take the change and try to reconnect with your father, but always prepare for the worst case scenario.

If you do decide to see your dad, I HIGHLY recommend you do so in a public setting (so people can call the police if your father becomes aggressive), with family members and/or friends nearby in case you need assistance or want to leave due to being emotionally overwhelmed by the experience.
