Unhappy I need more friends - October 20th 2015, 06:11 AM

I'm so tired of being ignored. I have a small group of friends that I care about but I really want more friends and it seems like whenever I try to connect with the people that I wanna be friends with I get ignored. Why is it so hard to just send a message back to someone who obviously wants to start a friendship with you? It's so rediculous to me so now I'm just looking for more friends online....

Hey there!

I'm sorry you're having trouble making friends. When you want to be friends with a person and approach them, it can be upsetting when they don't make the effort to do the same in return and seem to ignore you. Just know that it doesn't mean you don't have good qualities to make a friendship work, sometimes people just don't click through no fault of their own, you know?

Do you have any opportunities to do volunteer work in your area? That can be a good way to make new friends as you will be around others who are usually nice people and you may come to find that you have some common interests. I am not sure if you have a job or not but getting a job can become an opportunity to make friends for some people as you can get to know your co-workers if you get along with them. There are also lots of nice people here to form friendships with too.

Even though you may be hesitant at this point, I still suggest continuing to make efforts to make friends in real life with people you feel would be a good friend. You never know when you'll come across a kind person who just wants a friend as well. Continue being kind to others and just be yourself. In the meantime, building stronger and closer friendships with your current friends could be a good idea. Perhaps they could also introduce you to some of their friends if they have additional friends.

Are you at all sporty? Sports that involve co-operating with other people are a great way to make friends. At my university there are a variety of sports teams and the members go out on "socials" when they're not training together.

If you're not into sports, then perhaps Ellie's suggestion of volunteering might be worth considering. Something like a community garden project would be ideal.

I also agree that you shouldn't give up trying to befriend those around you. People not getting back to you does not mean you are not worthy of real life friends. Online friends are great, but it's important to have people that you can physically be with, too.

Be kind to yourself.
