Everyone YELLING at my sister because of College. - June 25th 2009, 05:49 PM

Well, my sister signed up for these schools after taking 3 years of DVC (Diablo Valley College). None of them accepted them except for UC Santa Cruz. My sister started telling me how she wanted to take another year of college because she wanted to get into Davis or Berkely. I didn't say anything, but I knew that she shouldn't take another year of college.

A few weeks later, my sister told everyone about her "plan." Our aunt (she asks about our grades like once every week) came to our house the following night. The problem with my sister is that she didn't sign up to UC Santa Cruz yet, which meant that it was to late to get in. She actually yelled at her and hit her about why she wanted to stay at DVC and not go to Santa Cruz. Dad hit her too like 4 times, and asked her why she had to lie about everything. Mom was just crying. After about staying to 11 pm arguing and asking what to do, she just yelled at her for the final time. She took away her phone and her computer. I don't know what she should do. My dad calmed down and told that if she couldn't convince UCSC to give her a chance, then she will have to stay at DVC and do better. I don't know what to do. I mean, as I am typing this, my sister is talking to my aunt right now about it, and she's crying.

I don't know if this will make sense to you at all. I just don't know what will happen to our family. Dad asked our aunt why she would have such a stupid daughter and he hit himself saying that it was his fault teaching my sister wrong. I don't know. What should I do?

Hey Alvin,

It's really terrible that your sister had to put up with that kind of abuse because of her decisions about school. School isn't something to be abused over, and although your family cares and wants to influence her decisions, they did not go about it in the right way.

I think your sister should do one more year at DVC and then apply for the schools she wants to get into. If it is too late to get into UC Santa Cruz, then it's too late. There's nothing she can change about that. She can try phoning up the college and asking about it, but I'm not sure of the likelihood of her being able to get in now.

I highly suggest you talk to your sister and let her know that you care about her and her decisions. Let her know that what happened with your family was wrong and that if she is ever being hit again, she should get out of the house and call some one about it. No school is worth abuse- ever.

I hope that everything goes well with your sister and that she is successful in whatever she does.

The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way.
Everyone has a story. What's yours?
