My dad is sooo muture - January 17th 2009, 07:26 PM

The title of this thread is sarcastic incase you didn't get it.

Ok well last wee my dad was smoking in the house which really bugs me and so I talked to him about that and, well here's the conversation:
Me: "Dad could you not smoke in tho house?"
Him: "Its my house, I can smoke in here anytime I want!"
Then I was like whatever and stopped talking. After a while he noticed that I looked mad.
Him: "What's wrong?"
Me: "You said this was your house, and its not your house, its our house and I should have a say if you should smoke in the house or not."
Him: "I don't care, I can smoke in here anytime I want."
Me: "Well second hand smoke is more dangerous then first hand smoke and I don't want to die like you!"
Then I ran to my room an put my music up really loud for two hours, then later he came in my room.
Him: "Are you still mad?"
Me: "Yes"
Him: "Well I'm mad at you."
Me: "Why?"
Him: "Cause your mad at me."
Now do you guys think that is a good reason to be mad at someone just because they are mad at you? I mean he yelled at me for speaking my mind, so yea I was mad but he shouldn't be mad at me because I'm mad at him, its childish!
Ok well what do you guys think?
P.S Sorry this was so long.

I know where you're coming from, Emily.
It sucks when dads don't understand how immature they're sounding. My dad once told me "Don't be a stranger." even though he never calls me and has not ONCE come to visit. It really stung.
You can't change your dad, and you obviously can't win by arguing. Is there someone else in your family who feels the same way you do? If you can sort of make an ally and make a stand together, it can help quite a bit. If he sees that you're not the only one that cares about it, he might feel more motivated to stop.
You can also say that you love him very much and want him to live a long and healthy life. Say that you're worried about his health and well-being.

Try not to come off as sarcastic or spiteful.

Hang in there! You can PM me anytime you want to talk.

I think it seems childish for someone to say "i'm mad at you for being mad at me" over the age of 5. Have you tried sitting down with your dad and discussing the effects of second hand smoke on you, maybe get some info offline and give to him to look over. I'm sure if you talked to him calmly, and didnt run off and turn your music up really loud, he would be willing to listen to you.
