No one really knows me anymore. - February 9th 2009, 10:15 PM

Basically, this has kind of been bugging me a lot lately.
I feel like I'm such a stranger to everyone these days.
Like no one really knows me anymore. Sometimes I think that maybe it's my own fault, but then I think maybe people just don't want to know me. My one used to be good friend barely knows anything about me anymore. Not even my family seems to know me very good anymore. It makes me feel like a stranger. Maybe it's because I've changed a lot. And I know changing is a fact of life. But these are the people that are supposed to know you inside and out, and I don't feel as if they do anymore. And they really did used to, so I honestly don't understand.

How can you have a friend or someone who cares when no one even knows anything about you anymore? Today in Religion class we talked about having people in our lives that are role models and who we can turn to, and I can't help but think, you know, I have no one to talk to. Absolutely no one. And maybe this is why. Because no one knows me anymore. Sometimes I don't even know myself. My friends are gone, and my family seems to be fading. I'm not sure whats up =/

Hi Amanda,

First of all, I'm a strong believer that no one can know someone else completely inside and out, so if you find that people don't know you as well as you do, that's just how it is.

But also, some people need a little nudge to get to know more about a person. The best way to do this is to talk to your friends and family. Ask them lots of questions and get to know a lot about them first and then comment or answer their questions about you. Getting to know people is a two-way street, both sides need to put in the effort. And I'm sure that if you start the conversation, they'll go with it.

Either way, your friends and family care about you! Just because they don't know every little thing doesn't mean they have to be distant. Make some time with them and they'll make time with you. It can be hard being the one to start conversations or invite someone to hang out, but I'd suggest just to go for it.

Also, understand that you're growing up too. Sometimes families get distant because you are more able to take care of yourself on your own, but that doesn't mean they don't care. And friends tend to try new things when they're teens as well- and that doesn't mean they don't want to be friends any more. Set aside some time with them and I'm sure you'll get closer.
