screwed up parents - July 26th 2011, 04:15 AM

my parents.
good hell, let me tell you.
my mom married my dad honestly not knowing what she was getting into and she tells me that alot.
my dad has a temper and treats everyone around him like shit, especially my mom. (hes never REALLY physically abused everyone, but were all pretty verbally abused and emotionally damaged).
i know my mom deserves better and just today she yelled that she wanted a divorce. not the first time. but i know a divorce will never happen because my mom knows she can't survive without my dad's income.
me and my mom are really close.
my dad? ha. not so much.
any advice? this has been going on for years now and i just really don't know what i can do right now being just a teenager.

Your mom has to decide what's more important to her: financial stability, or emotional well-being. While getting divorced WILL place a financial strain on her (and on you), your mom CAN get help. For starters, if your mom has been married to your father for a long time, she can get alimony. She can also get child support for you. Some single parents can actually live off of that money alone, if they find cheap housing arrangements and spend their money wisely. Your mom can also get a job - you're 14, so there's no reason why you can't get to school on your own (ex. carpool, public transportation, riding a bike). Finally, your mom may qualify for government aid if her total income falls below a certain point. She could receive food stamps for the two of you, as well as other benefits. There are also local organizations, such as Goodwill, that offer services to those in need. I would swing all of these ideas by your mom, then emphasize how important you think it is for her to put emotional well-being over financial problems.

I know how hard it is to see your parents fight. My mom and stepdad used to fight constantly. I'm really close with my mom too, and when they argued, I was always terrified for her. I finally told my mom how I felt and she divorced him. I think you should tell your mom how you feel. Tell her that it will be best for you both if they just divorced. It might help you out a lot. Hope things get better for you...Good luck.
