Thanksgiving dishes I can make with sweet potatoes - October 22nd 2017, 04:08 AM

I usually make candied yams around the Thanksgiving but I wanted to try something else. It can still be a Sweet dish like candied yams but it can also be savory etc.

I haven't ever cooked sweet potatoes though so the easier the better although I have heard they aren't that hard to cook.

I know I could probably google but I believe I tried that last year and there were so many recipes to dredge through that I couldn't pick one.

I figured that it might be worth posting here.

It depends on what you would like to do with the sweet potatoes. You can make a variety of things.

You can boil them like mashed potatoes. Where you don't need to add a lot to it, maybe some butter.

Another way to make sweet potatoes mashed is baking them in the oven. You leave the skin on and depending on the size they bake for 45-60 minutes. To check if they are cooked you poke it with a fork, if it's easy and not hard then they are done, if they feel hard when you poke them, they aren't done. This method will carmalize them, for some sweetness. When they are still really hot, mash them. (potato skins are really yummy) and add a little butter if you'd like. Also, have salt/pepper for others to use if they like that.

You could have sweet potato beet salad. You can either boil the sweet potatoes or bake them. You would need to cut the sweet potatoes into small cubes. Once that is done, you can boil them or bake them. It won't take long to do either. If you want them soft boil them, want them to be a little crispy on the edge bake them. For the beets you would boil them (you don't need to, but you can if you want to soften them a little bit), you could either cut them before or after. You can put any toppers on it, honey, or leave it plain with some oil. Typically, it is served cold, but you can warm it up.
