Talking Vegan Chocolate Cake! - September 19th 2009, 11:31 AM

Please, please please don't not read this just because it says vegan at the start! Okay, right. I just wanted to share this recipe with you, because, well...I absolutely love it! I made it for my birthday and every single one of my friends raved about it, it's become quite a famous recipe among us! I have to say, it's not my recipe I found it on a website for 'Pure' which is a dairy-free butter company. Anyway, I'd like you to try it and see what you think because I'm trying to prove that vegan good can be nice! If you do take the time to try it, do let me know what you think

Enjoy!

It certainly sounds pretty interesting! I've got a friend who's a vegan coming over in a few weeks, and I might try it out!
Thanks Hannah :]

Re: Vegan Chocolate Cake! - September 19th 2009, 06:33 PM

I made a gorgeous vegan choc cake last week using this receipe
Give it a go too!

Sylvia's Chocolate Cake by Sylvia Murray
Ingredients
9 oz. (250 gm.) Self-raising flour (81% flour is good), or can use wholemeal
1 oz. (25gm.) Soya flour
3 level tablespoons cocoa
6 oz. (150 gm.) caster sugar
1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
Half pint (300 ml.) soya milk
Quarter pint (125 ml.) corn or sunflower oil
3 tablespoons golden syrup

Chocolate filling:
4 oz. (100 gm.) drinking chocolate
Half ounce (15gm.) soft margarine
Hot water to mix to fairly stiff paste

Icing:
Green & Black's dark chocolate, melted

Method
Heat the oven to 160 degrees C. Grease and line the bases of two 8-inch (20cm.) sandwich tins with baking parchment.
Sieve flour, sugar and cocoa into mixer bowl.
Dissolve bicarbonate of soda in 1 tablespoon of the soya milk, and then pour into the flour with the remaining soya milk, oil and syrup. Beat well with electric mixer or by hand.
Pour into tins and bake for about 40 minutes, or until cakes spring back when lightly pressed.
Turn out onto wire rack. When cool, sandwich together with chocolate icing, and top with Green & Black's melted chocolate. Put half a glace cherry in centre if liked.

OOH I think I'll use it for my birthday party, as I am allergic to ALL milk products! Thanks for posting!

The recipe looks good. I do try to avoid margarine in general, so personally I would try recipes that have oil instead of margarine. Vegan baking can be good, and I make soy-free vegan baked goods often.

I also try to avoid soy.

I've had bad experiences with vegan chocolate cupcakes, but I would definitely be willing to try this recipe. My friends and I love making cakes and cookies a lot anyway, so it should be fun. Thanks!
