Bacon variations. - March 27th 2012, 06:20 PM

So I heard there's different bacon in the U.S and Canada than our British bacon!? What are the differences?

This is our bacon...

The only difference I see is that the one I posted is pre-sliced? Correct me if I'm not seeing something.

Our bacon is just like that.

But...there's also Canadian bacon. Maybe that's what the person was talking about?

I think the pictures don't really show you the difference. The bacon typically bought in the US/Canada is generally strip bacon (which I have found here as well, just less common) vs the wider slices that you typically find in England. Having moved from one place to the other I will definitely say there's a difference.

Or they could have meant "Canadian bacon" which isn't even called that in Canada, I guess, like EmisaurusRex suggested.

I feel our bacon is a lot better, it's wider than the US bacon and from what I've seen, they seem to cook it for longer as well and I don't like how it goes but that's probably preference more than a difference.

^ Definitely a preference -> I LOVE it crispy, but everyone that's cooked it for me here (okay, that's only three people but still) seems to like it a little less cooked. eta - not UNCOOKED, just not crispy.

I have my bacon crispy. I've never tried anything but British bacon.

Oh, and Brittany, our bacon is sliced...it's just not as small slices as yours.

Oh! I found this photo. With all of them together, it's a tad easier to notice the difference in size (although I'm not sure how wider bacon makes it taste better Now I want to try some of your bacon)

^ That is usually what Canadians call peameal bacon or "back bacon" We also have the strip bacon, and I have to say that "British bacon" does taste a lot different to what we get here in Canada. It's a lot less salty for the most part. I like both Canadian and British bacon, though. I have to say though, I've been in Tesco (in England) and bought bacon, and you get a lot less bacon in a package than you do here.

^I know, right???? But that holds true for just about EVERYTHING you buy here. Smaller packaging.
