Embarrassed - January 27th 2014, 11:58 PM

I have really bad socially anxiety. It's been affecting me a lot lately. I have to do a lot of presenting in school. I'm able to get up and present but I get realy scared. I start shaking and my heart races. I've had anxiety attacks over it. But anyways I had to present today and my teacher noticed I was nervous and she talked to me afterwards about it, she assured me more than once that I did a good job. But now I'm embarrassed that she noticed. I thought about talking to her about my anxiety but I'm too scared. What should I do?

Hey Lauren, I COMPLETELY understand having social anxiety and I have presentation horror stories of my own. To an extent, being afraid of public speaking is normal and most people get it. The bad news is, that if you go on to college you're going to need to work through this because it's going to be required more often. I'm glad you've considered talking to your teacher about it. I recently started seeing a psychologist on campus for mine because it's caused me to fail classes. I know it's scary talking about it with people, but they want to help you, so it's worth a try. You might also want to try your school counselor for help.

Thank you! I am able to present and get decent grades and pass. Most teachers just expect me to get over this but I can't! I'm trying right now to get over it. If I do talk to her about it I wouldn't know how to bring it up again.

Everyone is different, and I think it's a good thing that the teacher took the time to talk to you after you were done presenting. Don't be embarrassed that someone else noticed.

I get the same way and still to this day hate presenting in front of a crowd. I hope you took what the teacher said to heart when she said you did a good job multiple times....don't give up, it will get easier.

Thank you! And I did take it to the heart. It made me feel good that someone has noticed but it also frightens me.

Completely understandable, I would still be frightened in your situation, but that is just me. I am just glad that you realize that you did well and that your happy someone noticed you. God Speed, friend, god speed.....
