Really bad panic attacks - September 16th 2014, 07:40 PM

For the past year now I have been suffering really bad anxiety and have had some pretty bad panic attacks it's starting to ruin my life. I can't go out on my own, at work I can't be on my own and at night I am even worse even if I am at home. It's starting to get me down because I'm feeling worthless and like there is no point in anything because I am not able to do anything on my own I feel like I am a pain to my boyfriend and his family. My attacks go on for nearly 1 hour sometimes can be more but only 2 I can recall that happening. While I waiting for help from the doctors how can I deal with what's going on I have no confidence in myself I have a lot of self hate can this be from something that happened as a child? I just want to be normal. Help anybody?

Sorry to hear you are having really bad panic attacks and anxiety, but itís good that youíre waiting for an appointment with the doctors.

Itís easy to feel frustrated with yourself when you have anxiety and canít be on your own. Try to remember that it is not your fault and that it is the anxiety making you feel this way.

There are many causes of anxiety and panic attacks. It could be from something that happened when you were a child, constant stress, bad past experiences or in some cases, it can even be inherited.

When dealing with panic attacks, keep reminding yourself that all the feelings you have when you have a panic attack, are just that- uncomfortable feelings, it canít hurt you. Try doing some breathing exercises as these will help you relax and can shorten the length of your panic attacks. Also, try not to avoid situations where you will be on your own. Doing some exercise and yoga can also help.

Once you have calmed down, you could write down when you had a panic attack and what you were doing at the time, to see if there is a link. You could give this to a therapist, if your doctor refers you to one, and you will be able to explore this further.

To build self-confidence, I suggest you write down positive things about yourself and read them every day. If you struggle to think of things then ask family and friends. You could also look for confidence building classes in your local area or search for ways to improve confidence online. Also, try to do something you are good at every day as this will help you realise that you are good at things, and will build confidence.

Take care
