Just kinda worried. - October 11th 2014, 08:09 PM

I'm still recovering from social anxiety. Finished with my therapist because she had to go on maternity leave, taking medication, but still a bit nervous about things. I'm afraid to open my heart because of all the stories I hear, concerning domestic abuse and such. There's things I don't want to tell people, because they'll likely think I'm crazy. And like most, I get nervous before doing something new. But this is all relatively mild. Just wanted to get all this off my chest.

Hey Kym,

Overcoming social anxiety can take a while, but it is definitely possible.

It is very hard when your therapist is away for whatever reason. Did you have a chance to talk to her before she left, about alternative therapies or ways of coping while she is away? Also, you could check out our resources page that recommend other sites that can help you deal with anxiety: http://www.teenhelp.org/resources/#mental_health

It is natural to be afraid to open up, especially about sensitive topics, but more so with social anxiety. Did you talk to your therapist about this at all? Your therapist wont judge you or think you are crazy. If you find it difficult to open up, perhaps you may benefit from talking anonymously. You could use HelpLINK to anonymously talk about whatever is on your mind. Alternatively, you could call our recommended hotlines: http://www.teenhelp.org/hotlines/ You could also write down your thoughts and feelings and then the next time you have therapy, you could show the therapist what you have written rather than actually saying it, if you wanted.

Itís best that you tell Ďsafeí people first, such as a trusted adult like a teacher, doctor or therapist. They wonít judge you at all and they may be able to help you. However, you shouldnít feel forced or pressured to talk about things that you donít want to. Itís up to you what to say or what not to say.

It is also natural to be nervous (especially with anxiety) before doing new things. Just try to relax, and remember that, after a while, it will come much easier to you to do new things.

Itís great that you wanted to get this off your chest. Keep posting if you find it helpful!

Take care

Re: Just kinda worried. - October 12th 2014, 01:56 PM

It's not the anxiety that I'm worried people will find me crazy for. It's my interests, my beliefs. People made fun of me in the past, and I'm worried that since I've gotten even "weirder" as I left school, it'll be worse when I do start talking to new people. Thanks for the links, by the way.

Edit: Plus, my therapist isn't coming back. I had been doing well enough that she thought she didn't need to. I've been backsliding a bit.

Edit 2: Hotlines won't help, since I have a hard time talking to strangers over the phone.
