I'm getting worse - November 15th 2015, 02:59 PM

I have pretty bad anxiety and often have a lot of panic attacks. I used to see a counsellor but my college doesn't have a proper one- just a teacher with a waiting list of a few hundred, and as far as I can see there's only one decent counselling service in my town which also has a huge waiting list (at the moment of a year) but I'm getting worse. I can't do normal situations at all now and am scared to go out of the house, go to see friends, go to town. There are a couple of people I'm really comfortable with but I don't see one of them much and the ones I see more I feel like if I explained to much they'd be bored. I'm generally a cheerful, jokey person. So I don't know what to do... Today I was meant to go to a party thing with my best friend and some others but the minute I entered the restaurant I started panicking and didn't stop until I said I had to go home. It's annoying cos I know I won't see my best friend for another three weeks at least.as soon as I was alone in the nearest bathroom I stopped and calmed down. But that happens so much I can't keep escaping...


I can do it and I can get through it. So can you xx

Hey there!

Sorry your having a bad time of it at the moment. I guess that the panic attacks must be really frustrating and can potentially feel debilitating. It is important, however, to realise your successes. At least you walked out the house and got there. That is something you need to hold onto. It's really important to re-frame things in your own mind and be astutely aware of your successes. In regards to seeing a counsellor are there any phone contact services? I'm in the UK so can only advise on what we have over here, but are there any hotlines you could call.

What helps you to feel calm?

Your panic attacks are what I would refer to as secondary noisy feelings. By this I mean the feelings are strong and hit hard. How aware are you of the quiet feelings before them? Could you use a coping mechanism at this early stage?

Lots of questions I know, but I prefer to guide people to their solutions rather than pretend I know the answer to everything :-)

Hmm not sure if there's phone ones. There's childline (I'm in uk aswell) but the queues are really long often. At the moment there isn't much that makes me feel calm. There are a couple of people that make me feel better but obviously I can't rely on them all the time.
