Indigestion gives me panic attacks while sleeping - October 20th 2016, 12:35 AM

I don't have an anxiety disorder but for some reason when I get indigestion, I wake up with my heart beating fast and my throat burns a lot. Is this normal?

I have stomach problems and get indigestion really frequently. I too sometimes wake up with the similar feeling you're describing. I don't know if it is normal or not, but I have read that the discomfort felt with indigestion can make people panic, and can cause them to wake up to panic attacks. This is especially true for people who have a fear of vomiting.

I'm not sure if this will help but something I do is sleep slightly upright. I'll put a few pillows on top of each other or get one of those pillows with the arm rests and sleep against that.

Another thing that is worth a try is having a little bit of Ginger Ale or eating pretzels, bread, or crackers to help absorb an excess of anything in your stomach. You could also try chewing slower to prevent getting extra air in your stomach along with the food you're eating.

When I was stressed about things, I found I had indigestion at night too. Are you stressed about anything currently?

On top of what's already been said, it's generally good to not eat for 4 hours before you go to bed (so that your body isn't trying to digest food when you are trying to sleep).
