Question Gerontophobia - October 5th 2011, 10:08 PM

I have a horrible fear of old people and becoming old. I constantly look in the mirror and check for wrinkles, self-deny my age (19) and act like a kid. I can't bear old people, i feel like they are going to kill me because of the looks they give me and other people and the fact that they look so devil like and have the look of a serial killer. My boyfriend says its irrational and that they are old, frail and can't hurt me and trys to make me feel better by assuring me they will die soon anyway. But it's not helping at all. Am i being irrational?

Well, I don't like the way older people look upon me either, and I feel uncomfortable around most older crowds. Most of my friends are around my age or younger, and I feel more comfortable with teens and young adults, rather than older ones.

That being said, I think that assuming they're going to physically abuse you is definitely irrational. Worrying about their opinion, a bit less so.

Have you considered seeing a therapist about this? Therapists deal with various phobias all the time, including ways to cope with them.

How did you get this fear? Of course it is irrational. Old people are the least threatening age group there is. Young people are much worse than old people.
