Naming a Weapon -

So I'm a big fantasy addict. I play video games, draw, and write a lot. Today, I was just thinking about weapon hybrids and the idea for a new one popped into my head. It reminded me of a boomerang, but where it is divided at the center, and when you throw you get to keep one part. The main panel has a handle built in with room for fingers, and above those fingers, rings. Another panel, guarded on the edge facing the wielder, is pivoted at the end of the first panel. By pulling the previously mentioned rings towards the handle, it releases the pivot locking the two panels together, but also functions like a measuring tape and allows the pivoted panel to extend along a rope or chain for flail use. By returning the rings to their previous position, the now released panel is (once again like a measuring tape) pulled towards the base panel and locked back into place. Unfortunately, I can't think of a name for the thing! Can someone help me out?

Waitwaitwait what shape is this? Because it would be really hard to make a boomerang that would function when cut in half.
Also concerning rings to lock the panels etc one word: Electronics  [EDIT] Or Hydraulics if you're going steampunk. |

It would function a little less like a boomerang and more like an extendable sword, but it's shaped similar to a boomerang. I like the idea that it's actually possible, even if not effective!
 Maybe it could be used for a sport? My dad's going to see if he can help me design a prototype. I'm going to start with cardboard to see how it would work, then move on to wood. Maybe I'll throw a concept sketch up???

Couple quick things: any kind of flail weapon - a blade, spike, or bludgeon on the end of a chain or rope - needs to have plenty of weight at the far end. Something that's too light isn't going to do any significant kind of damage. Make sure you account for that.
As for the name, "shrike" was the first thing that came to mind. I think it fits the weapon well, and I don't believe that are any other medieval/fantasy weapons by the same name. The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours and in time our atoms will return once again to reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend, and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.
