Can't Focus - July 22nd 2012, 06:07 PM

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I cannot get any studying done. Finals are this week! I keep staring at all the practice problems, they are only review but I keep drawing a blank. It's as if I am reading a foreign language when I know how to do this stuff. I am not thinking about something else, in fact, I feel almost brain dead. It seems like I am disconnected from my mind and I just sit here and stare at the walls for hours without doing anything. I have wasted several days doing that, getting nothing done and just feeling more and more depressed about it. I try to excerise to "wake up" from this, but it did not help. I tried to sleep, ate something, I did various things, but nothing helped at all! I even tried to do some things that I love doing to get my creativeness going, but I stared at blank paper and a blank computer screen for such a long time. My scribbles were nothing but circles, and whatever I wrote sounded like gibberish. It really seems like my brain died. I eventually start getting frustrated and give myself a head ache, and still end up no where. I am highly motivated which is the only reason why I even bother to try all day everyday for the past several days. I feel so horrible now for wasting all the time and literally having NOTHING done.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this, and if so, how do you overcome it? I don't have much time. If you have not overcome it, do you perhaps have any ideas as to why this is happening or what I can do to regain my focus? Thanks everyone!

Hi!!

It seems you have writer's block and test anxiety. What I would do is try to do something creative to help. Look at some stories to get you going. I don't know if this would help.

PM/Email me at ilovemusic10101@aol.com.
Just email me if you wanna chat or need any help.

Just take a chance and don't ever look back

Why do you hurt me and treat me like you do? What have I done to deserve this from you? Would you do the things you do if you were me and I were you?

I don't know if that is it or not. It feels more like my brain is asleep.

Re: Can't Focus - July 22nd 2012, 08:27 PM

This has happened to me before (especially as a grad student), and as obvious as this may sound, the best thing I've been able to do is start doing the work, even if I don't feel like I'm at my best while doing it. The hardest thing for me is getting started. My mind feels blank, and it doesn't feel like I have any energy. As I start working, though, I slowly find my "groove," and things begin to pick up after half an hour or so.

I also set up a "reward" system for myself. For example, I'll reward myself with 30 minutes of TV time if I can work non-stop for 2 hours, even if I don't feel like I'm being very productive during those 2 hours. Oftentimes, I'll end up working for 3 hours nonstop, because I'll be so close to finishing after 2 hours that I figure I might as well get it over with. Part of my "reward" system is also to think about the ultimate reward, which is a good grade in my class.

Thanks for your advice. I read it your reply then went to try it. I did something similar that I thought might work a little better with me. I worked for an hour, took a break for an hour, then went back to work and kept working up until now. I did not finish, but I did get to a good stopping point and I feel tired now. I did get a whole lot done, but enough to where it made a big difference. I will do it again once I eat something then do the rest tomorrow. I also started with easier problems then as I got more and more into it, did the harder ones which helped too. So, I am making progress.

Again, thanks for your advice!
