Question First time getting a job? - September 29th 2013, 02:32 AM

Recently I got involved in a program through my school that assists in getting young adults job experience. I had to take a test with the basics (reading, math, grammar) and I passed! Now I will be attending an orientation and an all day workshop before I start the program, which will last ten weeks. The best way to describe it is sort of like a paid internship. Anyway I am so nervous! I've never had a job before, and I don't know how to dress or act. The workshop requires us to dress formal which is something I've never been comfortable with and depending on where I'll be working my job probably will too. So, any advice on how to dress or what it's like first time on the job?

Just a nice blouse, and depending on what you're comfortable with perhaps some slacks. A skirt that goes past your knees is also fine if you'd like.

I wouldn't recommend a short skirt or dress as it's a bit too much.

and comfortable formal shoes. avoid high heeled shoes.

No jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, shorts etc.

Did they give you any type of manual or handbook? If not, listen to the supervisor or whoever is directing things. Feel free to ask questions and don't be nervous. It's the first day so don't expect to be perfect.

You've had a landscaper and a house keeper since you were born

Well, formal typed dress does take some getting used to, but let me promise you this: that is 100 times better than having to wear some fugly uniform like you get at McDonalds or other fast food places. I feel like dressing fancy is something you just need to get used to... You can usually find ideas online or in magazines or that, or just copy ideas of people who you see dressing nice (ex. parents, older siblings)

As for behaviour, just behave properly, like don't over share (no one cares if your crush is ignoring you), once you get to know people better you can share more. And be polite and respectful--don't be dropping F-bombs everywhere and bad mouthing people and stuff.... It's really not that hard, people expect you to seem a little nervous on the first few days as everything sinks in and they'll know this is a first job thing for you so they'll help you figure it out.

Feel free to PM me if you ever need to chat or have questions
