Sponsor for financial help for my education - June 30th 2017, 06:34 PM

I am going back to College, as soon as the second week in July. All the courses are online. I should be happy but I feel different about the entire thing.

For me, asking for help, I never do as I have done things for myself at a very young age and couldn't rely on others for help. If I struggle I somehow find away to figure it out. I asked my cousin for financial help to pay for my education, her friend (sponsor I guess) is paying for my entire education and books. Obviously, this is a big deal for me asking for this type of help. I figured I would ask because my cousin has already told me that there is help and I just need to ask. Took me a long time to finally ask.

Anyways, the details of the program I will be starting winter 2018 is being finalized. I am going to go into Event Management. In order to be accepted into the certificate program I need to take six courses plus 100 volunteering hours in event planning or management.

I need to complete those six courses and I feel it would be too much for me, let alone 100 volunteer hours...

The courses I will be taking online are:
  • Managing conflict in teams
  • Computer Applications
  • Communication skills for business
  • Marketing foundations
  • Selling for success
  • Methods of fundraising
Plus 100 volunteering hours.

One of the six is being offered in two weeks and again in August. I was hoping more would be offered that way, the amount of weight would be lifted off my shoulders a little bit with course loads and volunteer work. Not to mention, I need to work to pay my bills.

I have already applied and submitted some applications for volunteer work and hopfully something will come through so I can start getting some of the hours before September.

I don't want to fail, fall behind, or even, waste his money because he is putting an investment into my education. That alone is starting to really make me anxious. I am starting to feel lost and I trying to do this step by step. I just don't know how to juggle online courses, a job, volunteer work, plus bills all at once. it is a little daunting.

Does anyone have suggestions or ideas on how to cope with this enormous schedule and change?

Hi Chantal,

First of all, congrats on going back to school! It's a huge change for sure. I remember how I was feeling when I first started going back.

Have you considered looking into OSAP? If not then you could also consider taking a bank loan. I know you mentioned that your cousin is helping pay your tuition and books, but I'm thinking the loan could help with making it so you don't have to work as often, especially since you will be doing volunteer hours on top of that. You have lots of time to do the volunteer hours, so once you get a volunteer placement you should consider doing like 5 hours a week, that way it's not too bad. it would take approximately 20 weeks to do the 100 hours, which I think is a great idea.

When it comes to the most stressful part, which is the classes that you need to do. Since you're not starting until January (I believe that's when you would start), I recommend looking up when the dates are available for those courses. That way you can try and make it so you have the least amount of classes at once. Let me know if you need help with this part.

I am familiar with most of those courses, so if you need ANY help with them just let me know

ORGANIZE! ORGANIZE! ORGANIZE! This is VERY important! Stay organized. Set times for you to do the online work, as sometimes it's VERY easy to fall behind in them.

Again, congrats! I'm super happy for you!
Brittany

Thank you for your response Brittany!

I am unable to apply to OSAP as I didn't pay my monthly fees so my file is now sitting with the CRA. So, I need to pay that amount to CRA for them to transfer it back over to Student Loans. It is a crappy situation but it happens, sadly.

For the volunteer work I was thinking of doing 10-12 hours a week or more if the time allows me to.

One of the courses starts in two weeks. The other five start in Septmeber. I do want a head start on getting hours this summer and then finish them up in the fall, but I could finish all the hours in the summer. It depends on how busy I will be this summer with other things.

When I spoke to the coordinator she mentioned I can apply to bursaries, which I will, so hopefully it can help lesson the money part for me. She said I can receive grants. I will be looking into as well.

You could also look into second career options. I don't know much about them unfortunately.

If the majority of your courses don't start until September, then I do recommend getting as much of your volunteer hours as possible, so you can then focus on schooling.
