Gap Year - May 27th 2009, 06:59 PM

I am graduating from highschool this spring and I have already applyed for University.
But I am now thinking that I would like to take a gap year... Is there any sort of "delayed entrance" I can do so that I dont have to reapply next year?
If so, what is it called?
I am going to talk to my counsellor about it but I want to know if:
a) it is even possible
b) what the term for it is called

Thank you!

Hey Amelie! I'm not positive that it's the same in Canada but here in the states it's called "defer". You can defer from a school which basically means that you apply, get in, but then let them know that you will be starting a year later. People do that so that they can work, travel, etc. My guess is that you will be able to do it but again, don't hold me to that--definitely a good idea to talk with your school counselor! Good luck!

I'm defering a year to an American university. I'm pretty sure it's called defering in Canada, too. You have to ask the university for permission, but they almost always grant it. You usually just send in a letter requesting permission and they send you back a letter saying yes. If you've got questions, you can always talk to the dean of admissions at the university you want to refer to.
As for what it's called, I'm calling mine "a year off." Gap year is a perfectly acceptable term. People will get what you're talking about it you talk about taking a gap year. I think the term is from England, but I'm not sure...
Good luck, and have fun!

Amelie- yes, most universities will let you defer your admission for a semester or a year, but they usually want to know what you're planning to do- are you planning to just sit on the couch and watch TV, or "do something" (like, for example, a service trip in another country)?

Re: Gap Year - May 29th 2009, 05:44 AM

Thank you!
Defer is the word I needed.

I am going to be doing a 9 month volunteer service program traveling around Canada with 11 other youth. (katimavik)

Once I got the word for it, I checked on the website of the university and they said that they only allow students to defer a year if it is with a recognized exchange or for health reasons..
But I am going to try anyways. It might just be something they wrote so that a bunch of people would apply and then defer.. (fingers crossed)

Thanks again♥

I think most universities will recognize Katimavik as a recognized change program. So many kids do Katimavik before going to Uni, you should be fine.
Good luck!
