Decisions D: - August 6th 2019, 05:06 AM

So I don't know if they're even going to offer it, but I have a job interview to be a peer support specialist only 15 minutes from where I live. My current job is 45 minutes away. Any ways, I don't know if I want to keep the job I'm at now or proceed with this one if offered. Currently I'm a mental health tech. This new job will be 50 cents more, but only part time whereas right now I'm getting full time. I just don't know what to do. Both jobs are right up my alley, I'm excelling as an MHT but also think I'd do well as a peer for others going through mental health issues. With this job I'm at now they provide health insurance, but if I go to the part time peer specialist I should be able to keep my Medicaid as it's only 20 to 30 hours per week. Any tips? I know you can't tell me what to do and only I can make the choice but I'm in conflict right now and could use some helpful insight into this.

I'm wondering if you have any long term goals- whether that means working your way up the career ladder or having financial goals you want to achieve? I ask because if you have something in mind that you want to achieve, that might help you decide whether or not to go for the peer support job.

You might also want to think about how your potential new job would affect your lifestyle- you'll be working less with part time hours and you may have less of an income. Would you feel the trade off with your full time job worth it?

It's also good to look at the similarities and differences between the job roles and how you would transition from one role to the other (more so if you have some authority in your current role whereas with peer support the focus may be on being a peer and letting the other person lead, I imagine).

I wish I could be of more help but I hope others can help out too. I'm sure you would be great at both jobs! Best of luck with the interview and let us know how it goes!

Hi there,

It sounds like a tough decision! I would be torn as well. However, I would make a list of all the pros and cons for both jobs such as how much you would be saving on travel expenses IF you took the job that is part time or would there be a loss as it is only part time. Is there a way to get more hours at the part time job or is there more career progression at the job where you are now? I guess all these things you need to consider before you make a decision.

Please let us know how you get on in the interview and I hope I helped. If you need anything, my inbox is always open.

So I have a bit longer to think. They want me to have a second interview she said the second interviewer would be my boss and that she would have the most information on the position.
