Applying for Valedictorian, need ideas... - June 8th 2009, 08:10 PM

...on how to begin and conclude an introductory speech.

In my school, we choose Valedictorians by presenting an introductory speech to staff. This speech is for candidates to demonstrate why they are the best person for this position.

I already have some sort of idea of what to say. The only difficult part for me is to begin and conclude the speech. I don't want to say "Hi my name is Gallade and I am a good candidate" or end with "I'm done now, thanks for listening" as those sentences don't really stand out. Polite, but plain. We have to present on the 10th. Thanks for any ideas.

Start off by saying a famous quote that represents your class. The Valedictorian of my class started by saying a word the class invented and being using it all year and than went to "fellow graduates..." Thank the faculty, your class for the 4 years. etc..

Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it.

i think the speech is about why they should be valedictorian not the actual valedictorian speech?..

anywayys. i agree with opening with a quote though, that's a good idea because it's not boring like saying "hi i'm so and so and i'm going to.." i mean, do you even need to introduce yourself? surely your teachers already know who you are?

i think you should include what you've done for the school/what you've enjoyed in your 4 years there. why you want to be a valedictorian.. why you would be good for the position.

we don't have valedictorians here so i'm not entirely sure what the position involves, but by the sounds of it it's like a representative for your year group?. in that case you could include why you think you would represent your year group well and what you would do if you got the position.

i don't think it's bad to end by thanking them for their time but before that you could say how you've enjoyed your time over the past four years and what you've learnt from your time there, and why that would make you a good valedictorian.

basically.. don't just make statements about why you should be it, make the statement and then back it up.. explain why.

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

Hey, thanks for the responses. I went through with the advice you offered. There were 6 candidates and after I made my speech, almost everyone thought for sure I would win. I didn't though but came extremely close. That's life

Sorry to hear you didn't make it, but hey, you tried your best.

As such, I'm going to close this now.
