Between submitting an application and calling them back?

For a job? It depends. If you submitted the application online, I would call after a day or two, just to ensure that they received it. If it was in person, maybe a week. It's good to let people know that you are interested enough to not only fill out an application (which anyone can do), but that you are also interested enough to take the time and effort to follow up on your application's status. Even just popping into the store every week or two, so that the manager begins to recognize your face prior to the interview, is going to improve your chances. Just don't come off as TOO desperate. =P

I'm assuming that you're referring to a job application. I don't really know the 'standard' amount of time but I will give you exactly what I would do if I was in your particular situation (believe me, I've been in your position enough times!).

First thing is first, I would call the manager of the store and ask if they were hiring. If the response was yes, I'd submit both my resume and an application. I'd ensure that I submitted both directly to a manager because young cashiers and sales associates may not even give the resume and application to their manager for whatever reason.

Depending on what the manager said, I'd wait a bit before calling back. If he said something like: "I'll call you if we have a spot for you on the team." I don't know if I'd actually call back. However if I simply submitted a resume and application and the manager didn't state anything specific, I'd probably wait a week or so.

At that point, I'd call back and ask to speak to the manager. I'd say something like: "Hi, my name is ____________. I dropped off my resume and an application last week and was wondering if you had a chance to look at it yet."

The fact that you called back not only shows great initiative and responsibility on your part but it also demonstrates a keen interest in the job you're applying for. Best of luck.
