Should I get this job?Should I go to school for this? - June 28th 2009, 06:28 AM

From the time I was very small, as far back as I can remember actually, I have always loved animals. The animal I have always been the most passionate for are dogs. So now that the opportunity has arised to apply for a job with the local SPCA (animal shelter) I am both excited and a bit worried. The job is cleaning and caring for the dog kennels. Which I wouldn't mind doing at all. The only bad part, however, is that I would also have to do routine euthanasia (putting a dog to sleep). I don't know how I would feel doing this. I know why animal shelters put dogs to sleep, and I don't blame the shelters, I blame people around here that do not spay and neuter their animals, causing a great deal of unwanted pets. So while I would enjoy the job because I'd be working with my passion, I'm worried that I won't be able to put down a perfectly healthy dog just because no one wants him or her.
Aside from this, I am also finding myself questioning if I should go to school for something where I will be working with animals. Right now I have signed up for college to study to be a medical assistant. However, the closer time comes for me to start classes and study in this field. The less I want to go to school and the more something in me says I'm doing the wrong thing. But I also fear that if I go to college for something where I'd be working with animals I won't find a job. That's why I am currently signed up for classes to become a medical assistant. I figured if I studied something in the medical field I'd be much more likely to find a job. But I keep thinking I'm doing the wrong thing. That I'll only be happy if I'm working with animals. What should I do?

Hey April, I think if you want to go to school to help animals you should do that because if you go to school for something just for the job opportunities you will probably regret it and hate the job you end up getting. As for the working at the SPCA if you think it would make you uncomfortable then don't do it, maybe you can find a non-kill shelter to work for?

If you want to work with animals then you should work with animals and going to college is a good way to go about it. It may seem like you won't get a job but if you go to college to study it, you'll have all that knowledge behind you to help you get the job easier then you would if you didn't have that knowledge.

As for the shelter, that would be a hard thing to do but I guess it's part of what working with animals is. If you think you won't be able to, do you think you could opt to do something else to make up for it or maybe apply somewhere like said, that doesn't do that type of thing?
