Question social sciences? - August 15th 2009, 01:29 PM

Okay you guys I'm in dire need of some help here.
I'm the first child in my household to go to university and I'm stuck in choosing my elective. They told me that it had to be a social science course, however, i don't have the slitest clue as to what would qualify as a social science course.

can someone please,of you're able to, tell me some of the social science courses that you know of, that would be offered to first year students?

Thank-you <3

everything will be okay
in the end
if it's not okay
its not the end.

Although I can't possibly know the specific courses offered by your university, the social sceinces are courses that are under history, geography, law, philosophy, sociology & psychology, all that kind of stuff. Surely your university offers plenty of courses that fall into one of those categories, plus the likely many more I'm missing.

Good luck

Look it up on the school website or contact them to ask if you can't find anything.

Do you have a specific university picked out? You could look round the university site and see what they have to order or order a prospectus home. Personally, I'd recommend psychology because I find it to be the most interesting. By the way, why do you have to be forced to do a social science? It is your life.

If you know what the university is that you're going to, then just look at their academic calender or list of courses. They'll say there what counts as a social science. But a rough idea would be sociology, philosophy, women's and gender studies, religion/theology, cultural studies, political science, law, history and possibly geography. Some universities may also consider psychology to be a social science but not all aspects of psychology would be a social science. Pretty much all of those are offered to first-year students.

Because many universities have requirements that if you wish to earn your degree (BSc, BA, BCom, etc...) you need to take a certain amount of humanities, sciences and social sciences.

I don't know why, I suspect it's to make sure you're well rounded and graduate with knowlege other than what you got your degree in. I personally hate being forced to be well rounded and most of the time (not always) people only take the requirements to graduate and then never use them.

All these suggestions were great and I hope they helped. I personally loved psychology. It is a really interesting course and if you get a good professor it can be fun. Social Science classes are usually pretty interesting though :P . Best of luck.

In college a lot of social science classes are part of the general education (pratically all). My guess would be they wanted to ensure that she is getting her general education requirements done. But, that is only a guess
