To/To Not Bring Laptop First Day? - August 31st 2009, 08:48 PM

Should you bring your laptop to your first day of class? I also have it in a leather bag I hang on my shoulder, lol, is that nerdy?

Holly!

Not really nerdy at all, I don't really see a problem with it. A nice carrying case you have, I see

I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one doing it, and it's better to be prepared then not, right?

This one. Do you think It looks too professional? Like if I walk into class people are going to think strangely of me?

Around my school, people usually don't carry around laptops. We're allowed to have them, but no one brings them. If someone did, they wouldn't get made fun of, they'll just get the stupid question of "Why do you have a laptop"...then once you answer they'll say "ooooook?". For me personally, I wouldn't care.

Eh, don't think anyone would care.

In my school, it depends on the teacher if you're allowed to have one for each class. So when someone actually gets a laptop in class that allowed, people are all like, "<person> has a laptop, oh my goooosh that is so cool"... but my school is filled with wacky people, wacky teachers, and crazy rules

Basically, if you want to bring it, then bring it. Shouldn't matter what other people think. You'll probably just get people envying the fact you have a laptop (depends on your school though, I guess)

In my high school you were required to bring one for school. But right now in my new school if it is easier to take notes in your laptop you can bring it, and it has wireless internet so you can you your homework online while in class.
I would recommend only if your school has wireless.

In university it's quite common for people to use laptops. On your first day of class it's generally the professor(s) welcoming the students to the class, giving an introduction to the course, TAs, etc... . There may be some note-taking but it's not a lot as the professor(s) recognize that it's a first-year course. If you are to bring a laptop, then charge it up before using it or try to find a very good seat near an outlet.

As for the laptop case, Holly, it doesn't matter. You're not going to university to look good and impress people with your clothing, shoes, laptop case, etc... . You're there to learn and that should be your focus.

But to reassure you, first-year classes tend to be the largest out of all the other years. So people aren't going to zoom in on you because there's too many other people. Also, people are in the same or similar state as you are: worrying about the class so they'll be to pre-occupied with their own concerns to comment about a leather laptop case. It's not something very unusual, it's not as if you're walking into the class nude or on 10-foot stilts. That would get attention but a mere laptop case wouldn't.

If it really concerns you, ask your teacher. Email is a great tool

You can lose yourself. Everything. All boundaries. All time.

And just when the sweet confusion is so intense you think you're gonna die... you kind of do.

That's a miracle.

Not nerdy at all, it's actually quite sensible.
