Settling on my major - September 21st 2009, 10:24 PM

Since I was about 10 I've always known that I want to have a career in archaeology of ancient Egypt. In university I've been working towards that, ready to declare my major in Near Easter Studies (NEST) with a minor in French, but I'm getting scared that if I follow through with archaeology, there won't be any job opportunities for me. Working at a university would be amazing, but university positions are few and far between. I've been talking to one of my archaeology professors, and he recommended I look into doubling my NEST major with a major in anthropology, which would open up jobs in other areas, like cultural resource management jobs. I would need to catch up a bit, but I could definitely do it with summer classes.

The thing is, for my science requirements I've been taking math courses, and I really like them. I'm starting to feel like a combination of Math and French might be wiser, in terms of getting jobs. There's a shortage of math and french teachers in BC right now, and even if that trend doesn't continue, there has to be more jobs for high school or elemetary teachers than there is for archaeologists. Other than that, being an actuary seemed mildly interesting to me, and it's not exactly a dream job, but I think I could be happy with it. I still really want to do archaeology, and get a PhD in Egyptology, I'd kill to get a career like that, but I'm really nervous I'm making a huge mistake. Any advice on what I should settle on?

Not around so much now that school's started

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."
