English Talk - January 15th 2010, 09:03 PM

Haiii
So, I did an english talk last year and failed it, so now I have to do another one
Anyway, I'm really scared as I hate standing in front of people, also I have absolutely no idea what to talk about.
Does anyone have any tips I could use?
Or an idea of a subject that I could speak to my class on for 5 minutes?
Thanks

I remember when I had to talk for 15mins in front of the class for my final. I ended up coming with the conclusion that everyone loves stories, I told a story related to the class(engineering) and everyone ended up liking my speech thank God

I'm exactly the same. my friends find it funny coz all i talk about for days before is speaking and when i do it i go really red and speak so quietly that noone can hear me anyway. the more you do it though the better you will get .

i'd try talking about something you know alot about rather than something new or talk about an experience you've had in your life. If your doing it infront of the class then look at someone you know like one of your friends rather than the teacher or the rest of the class. also if your friends smile then you will feel less embarrased!

Good luck

pick something you're really passionate about.. and something that you're comfortable talking about. you could talk about a person, like a famous person or something.. if you have a favourite singer or band maybe?. or an organisation?. i seem to remember one girl in my class did hers on ballet and another girl did her talk on the author jodi picoult. i did my gcse english oral about turkey[the country] because i used to live there and it was pretty easy to talk about. 5 minutes isn't that long.. so you could definitely script the vast majority of it. then just practise, practise, practise. try practising in front of other people, even if it's just your family.. because then you'll get used to talking in front of other people rather than just the mirror. also, don't talk too fast and get eye contact with your teacher from time to time if you can.

Why don't you include a short clip showing the pics you've taken so far? Good way to start/finish

Blank them out dear baby.
And if you can not manage that, picture them all naked. ;D Completly takes you're mind of that they're staring at you. My teacher told me thay one ;D
Good idea to do it on project 365.

Re: English Talk - January 20th 2010, 07:55 AM

I have stage fright, and even if I work on an assignment all semester and go up there feeling confident and know things like the back of my head - even have the flash cards memorized! I'll start shaking like a leaf after 3 minutes and I start to forget things.

My math teacher suggested me drink lots of water before I go up, because my body dehydrates itself when I'm in a panic and it makes it more difficult to speak. It takes the edge off, but the nerves are still there - I just sound less nervous.

Pick something you love to talk about or a topic you're passionate about so that you can come up with enough to talk for 5 minutes. This also makes it as fun and interesting as possible for you, since researching something is no fun at all unless you're interested. Also, remember that you are NOT the only one who hates doing this, so the audience understands what you're going through. Even teachers know we hate these things.

pretend that you have to teach the class something and try to interact with the audience, it'll keep them awake and dont think too much about the timing of the speech beause that might make you nervous. pick something you love and show the audience that youre passionate about your topic and they'll most likely be interested too
