It's quite serendipitous i came upon this post as i was very recently interested in the peace corps! i emailed my recruiter and have plenty of answers for you.

firstly, definitely get a degree in something you can apply to volunteering. most volunteer positions *require* a degree of some type. Below is a list that don't require a degree but still require significant experience:

Quote:
-Forestry: extensive experience running a forestry business or managing forestry property,

-Agriculture: 3+ years full-time farm experience,

-Construction: 18 months journeyman work experience

-Business: 4+ years as a manager or owner of a business; 5+ years full-time management or organizational development experience with non-profit organizations,

-Information Technology & Communications: 5+ years experience in programming, systems analysis, systems design, or consulting in computer field, or

-Youth Development: 5+ years full-time counseling experience with at-risk youth (between the ages of 10 - 25).
As for being a competitive applicant, you'll want plenty of formal volunteering experience in your local community (i'm volunteering at my hospital in march)

i've attached a sheet i was given about being a competitive and appealing candidate.

Good luck!
Max

I have actually thought of doing this too. I am going to wait until it I get all my college done but then I might take some time and do this. It sounds like a great opportunity.

its a good idea to do it in my books. and after you get done doing your thing in the peace corps employers will most likely think highly of you for being in the peace corps.
