Arrow I'm enrolled! - March 31st 2010, 10:17 PM

I'm now enrolled in school for Phlebotomy/Lab assistant/EKG assistant! I'm so excited guys! The only thing I'm afraid of are the needles but I'm going to be okay. Does anyone else have this job?

I don't have this job but for part of one of my second-year human biology courses, we had to perform ECG's (or EKG's) on fellow students and analyze the outputs, and give some in-depth physiological reasons for what may be occurring.

What did you think about it?

It was pretty fun and interesting because we had to have 1 member of the group run around the floor to get their heart racing but overall it was just one part of the course, which was a general survey of the major organs and organ systems so we didn't go very in-depth about the ECG or EKG.

Analyzing the ECG output was not terribly difficult, just takes some time especially when the output is large. It's more than merely looking at it and seeing when and how high the various components are, it's applying that to the human body. I suppose the hardest part was that some people have U-wave while others don't so comparing across people can be a bit hard if others lack the U-wave.

If you know your human anatomy and physiology well, then it makes analyzing it a bit easier but if you don't know it all that well, especially not knowing how certain organs interact, then you're going to find it hard and may not provide any useful insight to the person/patient/doctor that they couldn't find themselves simply from looking at how high the waves go.

I'm not sure if this is what you were asking or if there was something specific.

LOL, no problem, just make sure before bursting everywhere, you do understand human anatomy and physiology at the various levels (i.e. the heart pumps blood and has "pacemaker cells" is no where near enough). But to be honest, although I'm studying human physiology and pharmacology, the heart isn't the focus of my studies so I'm not the best person to ask about ECG's.
