Writing a speech - January 13th 2011, 11:02 PM

Okay guys so I'm writing a speech for FCCLA. It's a club im in at school. I'm going to read this speech and run for a regional officer. Problem is I'm super bad at starting a speech. Once I get into the body and all that I'm fine but like the very first line is always super hard for me.

I have to right a speech about what my 20 is. What somebody's 20 is where they are in life. Like what FCCLA has done for them how it's made them into a better person things like that. I also have to sell myself I guess you could say. I have to make it to where I sound awsome and people want me as a regional officer.

Any ideas on what my first sentence should be? I just need help getting started and then I'm good.

I've always made it a point to start my literary writing in medias res, or just very starkly. You can do the same with a speech, but it only works if you're really -- and I mean REALLY -- good, so I actually probably advise against that.

When I'm not writing in any literary style, I struggle so much with introductions. In this case, I think it'd be effective to just tell a story that relates to what you're going to talk about. There's nothing wrong with starting "When I was twelve years old, I...".

Good luck, both on the speech and on running!

"Want to know a secret?

You are beautiful.

Black, white, gay, straight, bisexual. Whether you are smart or quiet or impossibly in love with your best friend, someone out there cherishes your smile and gets butterflies when you walk into a room.

Someone out there can't stop thinking about you. You Are Beautiful. Don't ever believe differently."
