Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone -- HELP. - March 15th 2009, 10:52 PM

In my English class, we have to pick a movie then break it into the parts of the Hero Journey.
Except I can't figure out what the gift is.
Explained here: "The Gift:
The hero is often (but not always) given a gift that is necessary for him to complete his task."
Now.
I have tried love as the gift, my teacher said no.
I tried the broomstick.
That isn't it either.
I'm thinking maybe the wand, but that doesn't help him in the Final Confrontation (As the hero and allies overcome the obstacles, they prepare for the final obstacle or confrontation. This often takes the form of a final battle or a fight with a monster or perhaps a powerful wizard. This can take place before or after the Revelation and/or Transformation) does it?
Ahh I'm so confused.
Please help?

Isn't it his mother's protection and love that saves him? I suppose it's either that or the mirror of Erised

I thought it was love.... but maybe its friendship. Or compassion. Or his friends. Or his perseverance. COURAGE!! Maybe it was his courage!!

I will keep thinking... Hope that helped a little!

Courage I think would be the right answer. But I'm not 100% sure. Then love would also be correct, because I think he gets courage from love and friendship. But Courage would be the final answer.

Does that sorta sound right?
Magic could also possibly be it. But courage seems more right. And magic isn't cliche enough.

Re: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone -- HELP. - March 15th 2009, 11:30 PM

I would say your best bet is his mother's sacrifice which could also be paralleled to Ron's sacrifice in the chess game. Other ideas:
-Mirror of Erised (the final confrontation kind of centers around it, doesn't it?)
-Invisibility cloak? "Use it well" ...definitely seems like a gift.
-Possibly the words of encouragement and support that he gets from his friends. They give him the strength and determination to carry on to the confrontation with Voldemort. ("It's you that has to go on, I know it...")

If it's not too late to change movies, you could consider that as well. I personally find it hard to discuss Harry Potter in terms of the hero journey without talking about the whole series because they really do build off of each other so much. But even if you're set on doing HP, the Chamber of Secrets seems to have a more obvious "gift" (Sword of Gryffindor, Fawkes). Just something to think about

I think the gift would most definitely be his mother's life for his own. The whole series basically centers around the motif of sacrifice. His mother's sacrifice gave him protection, and that was the only way he was able to survive for so long. However, in talking in terms of the first book, it could also be the gift of friendship. Harry, growing up with Dursleys, never really had the opportunity to see the power of friendship and the strong ties it encompasses because he was always berrated by his Aunt, Uncle, and cousin. He didn't fully understand what it was like to be accepted until he met Ron and Hermione, which really was the only reason he was able to go on throughout the whole series. Without the two of them, he couldn't have necessarily completed his task.

However, does the gift have to be a tangible thing?

I emailed my teacher and she said it has to be a physical object that helps the protagonist in some way.
I guess it could be the invisibility cloak but how does that really help him?
To get past Fluffy maybe...
I'm not sure.
I really think it's love!
Agh.

Your teacher is annoying......
Friends are physical objects? His mother is physical?
His scar is physical- but has a significance that you can tie to love.

Yeah but no one hands him friends, or hands him his mother, it has to be like something someone gave him/he found etc.
Like in Finding Nemo, the gift is the mask that had the address on it because it helped him know where he was going.
I don't even know.
Watch her take points off my final essay for this.

The Flute that Hagrid gives him allows him to get past Fluffy because the music puts her (him?) to sleep. He found The Mirror of Erised allows him to gain access to the Sorcerer's Stone and thrwat Voldemort's attempt to return to power. The Invisibility Cloak allows him to not be seen and gain access to the Mirror of Erised. Both the flute and the cloak were gifts. Or there's Hedwig. She was technically a gift too, but she didn't help all that much in the overall scheme of things other than giving Harry company.

The flute!
Why didn't I think of that?!
Thank you so much, I bet you that's what it is.

-the Invisibility Cloak (he used it to get past Fluffy, and to find out about the Mirror of Erised, which was important because the Mirror of Erised is what helped him get the stone at the end of the movie.)
-his Hogwarts Letter (he found out he was accepted to Hogwarts, and therefore was able to defeat Voldemort)

You've given me an excuse to watch the movie again If I notice anything else after I watch it again I'll let you know.

Waittt.
Katie, he didn't give him a flute in the first movie.
Because Snape enchanted the harp to play remember?
Maybe it's the Invisibility Cloak.

That doesn't really help him in his journey though, it just begins his journey.

He gets the flute in the book. Darn book to movie interpretations.
Then your best bet is the cloak. The only other thing I can think that he gets in the movie would be the scrap book of his family in the end. But I don't see how that really helped him on his journey. So yes, cloak it is.

I agree. The only other thing I can come up with is his wand, but that really wasn't a gift-- he had to buy it.

With his parents' inheritance which was a gift

I'd probably say the cloak too, it enabled him to find the mirror

That's a bit of a stretch, but I guess it sort of makes sense.
